The lower tang, the area right behind the trigger guard is too long to be a 98 mauser or mosin-nagant.
the mosin and mosin-nagant its a two different rifles

Hello waseeker!, Beerbarrel here, See if you can clean the top of the barrel, right in front of the chamber, see riverdog's reply 16. Even from the additional pictures, it still looks like a Japanese rifle.

Here is a pic of the Arisaka rifle action, and an exploded veiw, what do you think?

In my opinion, I have owned several Type 38,long rifles, Type 38 Carbines, Type 99 rifles and Type 44 Rifles. What I am basing this on, strickly by looking at the pictures, is the distance from the front of the barrel to the front edge of the front sight, the location of the rear aircraft type sights, the lower trigger guard (just in front of the trigger)what appears to be the magazine release, the overall shape of the trigger guard as shown in the exploded view of the gun posted by riverdog. Again I am basing this on the rifles I have owned. One thing that will determine this is the reply riverdog sent showing the model no. and chrysanthemum. McArthur, to help the Japanese save face, had the mum ground off, however, a lot of rifles were picked up before this was done. Another point is the mum may have been ground off, but normally the model no. will still be there. Another thing to remember is that the Japanese
would take another manufactures design and copy it, so this is why, in my opinion, that it may look like another type of rifle.

The high safety lug behind the bolt slot and the extended lower tang indicate it is a Jap rifle.I believe the sight positions on the barrel rule out the type 44 carbine,it appears to be a type 38 carbine. The barrel should measure 19" long.

There is no thumb cut on the left receiver wall and that along with the long lower tang rules out both the Mausers and the Springfield. They also have a lower safety lug.
