Old Copper

These 4 pieces, appearing to be copper coins were found in an area close to 3 musket balls. The area of NJ where they were found today has some revolutionary war history. Any ideas?

Are you sure that they are made from copper? They remind me of electrical box knock-outs.

I sorta agree they don't look like copper, seems to have rust on them, will a magnet pick them up?

No, they’re not magnetic.

The musket ball fit the the dimensions and weight of a French one. There were others believed to be American nearby and we believe there are many more on site.

Just some thoughts about the discs. They are very small for an old copper coin. Their irregular shapes are against being coins. They might have such an irregular shape and be thin If they were "RR" coins, coins run over by a train. But rolling over coins like that enlarges them. So i think they are something fairly modern from a corrosive environment, like a dry cell separator or an old car ignition part.

Were you in the pine barrens? I was detecting in the pine barrens of long island ny with my buddy and he came upon a very similar group of coin shaped things. Almost exactly like yours. They were also not magnetic. They were near a railroad track. Slightly larger than a penny. We thought maybe the acidic soil of the pine barrens corroded the coins beyond recognition. Its weird that they are larger than a penny and about the same size as a nickel but way thinner. The ones he found looked nearly exactly the same and were all in about a 5 foot by 5 foot area.

That was my first thought. There was a site I detected once where I found a bunch of these things and thought I had found a hoard of farthings. Alas, punch outs.

Northern NJ, but yes the wheaties were highly corroded
