Cool find! Kind of looks like an old, hefty wedding band. I don't want to get your hopes up but, you say it was found in the LA area. That's near the Pacific & salt water. It may be a ring that was made before the Stamp Act of 1906. It could be a low karat gold that is tarnished from age near the salt air/water. Test a little spot on the inside of the ring with a gold/silver test kit. Good luck ! Cheers !

Appears as a decorative brass wedding band that may have had gilt on it at one time. Over the years i have found quite a few brass rings in relic/home sites. One reason for brass was it was more affordable than gold for the poor. Another reason is that there was worry of theft, especially in Civil War sites.
