Hi Everyone,
Got out to the old swim hole today, nice to see some sand moved around. The area was bowl shaped so I started at the bottom and gridded my way out. First hit was the 1817 George III British Silver Half Crown 8-) then I got the toasted IH and right before I left I got the 1863 "fatty IH".
Thanks for looking,
TDNY

that's cool. we always see lots of old British coppers posted that are found here but rarely any British silver. great find :icon_thumleft:

Wow, you had a heck of a day! The half crown is very cool...try wetting it and wrapping it in aluminum foil tightly for a few minutes. It'll get warm and smell like rotten eggs, but will clean it up nicely if you do that a few times and then wash with soap and water.

Not sure if it works with coins but.. I collect old pocket knives and when I buy one at a yard sale or find one when i'm fishing that is in pretty rough shape.. I can sometimes use toothpaste and it cleans it up very nicely.. Noy sure if this will work with buried coins i'm just getting into this hobby.. Just a thought for you to try...

Congrats on the big old Silver. A cool and unusual find for sure.

Yes, it works well on silver...I sometimes use it (toothpaste) or baking soda to clean my silver coins jewelry; however, once done it's considered a "cleaned" coin. I think the aluminum foil will clean well the silver that has turned black.

I was thinking about a low voltage electrolysis Erik, what do you think? I have a 3V 500mA unit i use on the silver rings and charms I find at the beach.

That would not be my first choice for cleaning that nice coin...I just sent you a PM with my suggestions. Best, Erik
