Old Silver and Civil War

Hello All,

This video is two hunts.



On Day 1, we got out and scouted some turn rows in the cane fields. I lucked upon two silvers--a war nickel and (surprise!) an 1853-O Half Dime in the turn row!



That was about it for the day. High hopes, but was mainly a bust.

The next day we got out in a new area I'd done some research on. Got permission for a field that just "looked good," and Shang and I walked out there. First off I dug a piece of old white lead. I said "lets hunt around here." The very next signal was a minieball!



Gotta love that camp ESP!

Then we kept digging melted lead and bullets until we ran out of the patch. Turning back I got a pewter piece that might be a pommel of some sort. Has feather like design on it. Any ideas? (See the last "group finds" photo below)


Shang dug a button from a shoulder scale, which is the first one we've dug down here (I've dug some of them in Virginia before). As soon as he said he had a guitar tuner shaped thing I knew what it was

The sun got low in the sky and he had to leave and I made a big loop around the site in a hasty exploration. I dug a tiny piece of decorative silver, then I got back to where I'd started and dug two pieces of can. The third signal locked in around 60 on my F75 and to my shock and surprise I was looking at Spanish Silver in the plug!



It was an 1810 Half Real!

I use the F75 in 3 tone setting, disc set at 8. Dig all that reads above 8. In the "day 2 hunt" above, I was using disc set at 0. (but in the disc mode, not all metal).

I hunt a hunted out 1850 City Park. I get mostly CW 3 Ringers (deep) and v-nickels. I’m looking for the best setting for some of that deeper silver the other guys couldn’t get to. I have the small, stock and 13” Ultimate coil. Not much iron but of course pull tabs a can slaw. Any F75 suggestions?

I have the Ultimate 13" and the Tornado. I like the Tornado the best. I believe it's 12". The mistake I make is going to parks with lots of power lines.(just forget) and the F75 with the Tornado goes crazy. Where I was Friday it was nuts. I tried every mode, reduced sensitivity to 27 but sometimes I just screw it up.My AT PRO handles that park A lot better. But for deeper targets the Tornado with sensitivity at 70 to 75 works good. Sorry, I didn' mean to ramble on.

The depth meter is your friend. Even a signal that gives a tone but no numbers, or bouncy numbers and no tone, but reads seven or 8 inches or deeper, dig it. You will be surprised

Great hunt. Love the old half dimes. They are truly a tiny coin, makes a Half Reale seem like a big silver. Congrats!

It was dug in the middle of a patch of bullets so perhaps it was a civil war drop. We don’t dig many of the Ferdinand Reales—majority are Carolus III.
