I was out detecting a very old site over the weekend when my wife and I came across this old structure in the middle of the woods. We were a couple of miles from the nearest house. It is made out of coquina coated brick from the Southern Clay Manufacturing Company which is the same brick used to build the streets of St. Augustine. I think it used to be an old well. Anyhow, we are going back to clean the overgrowth from the area so that we can detect it.

Very cool! I assume you gained permission to hunt there?

Was just wondering why some people always feel the need to ask if anyone gained permission? I just don't ever get asked that question when I say , find a new fishing spot, or find some cool seashells. Cool find by the way though!! Looks like it could be a really productive lil out of the way spot once ya clean it up a little!!

The only reason I asked is I am always wondering if others bother to get permission when hunting deep in the woods. I have many places I would like to hunt but researching the owner would be almost impossible. No sourness intended...

Interesting! I hope the dark leafy vine is not poison ivy, or at lest your not allergic to it!
Looks like a good site to search. GL. HH!

Wonder why one wall is missing. Are the remnant bricks laying around?

Great find I hope you do well there it reminds me of a fire pit.

Could be an old brick outhouse. They really did build them out of bricks sometimes.
I heard of a few in VA once that were still in use.

It looks like it is as tall as it ever was. But that would explain the missing wall. Had to have a door.

Yes, I do have permission. My company purchased 800 acres in St. Augustine and this is the land that I have been detecting.

Well that rules out a outhouse. Is the bricks sitting on a footer or do they extend into the sand?

weird that's it's out in the middle of the jungle .

What is that place ???

and that dark green ivy does look like poison ivy .

Hope there is some lost goodies .

It could have looked a whole lot different around there when that was built St Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied city in the U.S.

I saw an app on here to find out who owns what land. It worked for my area (pa). There is a free 7 day trial when you first download it so if you do think of every spot you want to know who owns it before downloading it to get the most out of the trial. It's called onX Hunt. After you download it the display button is a deer rack with the apps name below.

They bricks go down into the sand. The coquina stops at grade and then it changes from a square to a circle of bricks. The bricks continue on down but it looks like it is filled with dirt.

It sounds like a old well to me then. I wonder why they stopped the coquina at grade though.
How deep are you going to excavate? I bet the water table is somewhat shallow.

I will go download it right now. Thanks! I'll let you know how it works for me.

Not exactly sure how to excavate it. There is a tree next to it that I could tie off to and get a shovel and start digging.
