Old Whites DFX problems

I am noticing a problem with my DFX that has become quite annoying. In the past I would seldom get false positives but anymore the false positives have become so frequent that I have stopped using it all together.
What happens is that I get a hard signal and I locate the center and depth (in the past this has been a great feature and seldom wrong) but now I dig to the specified depth and nothing there. I dig wider and up to 6 inches further down and it says there is something in mid air, nothing but air there. I have tried a aftermarket large double D and I always dig AIR on every hard hit now.

Any suggestions or advice?

Back when I had a DFX, I had a couple of excessive falsing issues and they both turned out to be bad coils. If you tried an aftermarket coil and it is still doing it, you may have a controller issue. Maybe borrow another DFX coil and see if it still falses.

Hmm...I have both the DFX & V3i. Although I've never encountered "AIR" false positives before, I have found an occasional hot rock, which seems like nothing is there, since there is no metal to be found. Is the place you detected when you encountered the problem the same place where you didn't have issue before? It may be a difference in ground mineralization.

I've had this problem everywhere and it is to the point I just stopped using it. Because it was unreliable. I would have a big 12-in hole and it would say that there's something in mid-air in the middle of the hole and this is a consistent. Doesn't matter how deep I dig the hole it says there's something in the middle of the hole where air is. It got to the point where I just bought another one and it works fine but this one air false all the time now. I even tried different coils and that is not the problem.

Glad you have a work-around - getting another one. While spending time it will be time well spent, if you ever get a chance, consider doing a bench test with the original machine and see if the falsing is consistent.

According to the DFX manual, it might help to reboot it by removing the battery while it is on.

My first guess is a bad coil. But it sounds a little like the ground balance isn't working. Have you accidentally turned GEB off?

I have owned and used the DFX since its inception. The only time I had problems was when a tiny piece of metal gets caught in the coil cover, this has happened many times to me in the middle of a hunt. Tap your coil lightly and see if it falses. Tap your connections and see if it falses. The other was the connector from the coil. I have purchased new connectors and pulled apart a few, its a pain in the ass but found this to be a problem. The other possibility is you found something deep. I was hunting with a buddy that was swinging a 3030. I had a signal from all directions he came over and nothing, he started adjusting his machine trying to get a tone but was unsuccessful. He had a stock 10 inch coil and I was using an aftermarket 13 inch coil. I dug the target and it was a pocket watch at 18 inches, just saying. Good luck.

I ended up finding the newer version of the DFX and it turns out the old DFX is defective. I even tried the new coil that I bought to see what the falsing issue was and it didn't happen with a newer machine.
