Since I haven't been able to find any new spots lately, I went back to my old reliable woods that I've been hunting since June, 2006. Yep, you've heard it before, the woods where I found the four Reales (two 1 Reales and 2 Half Reales), 1787 Massachusetts Cent, Capped Bust Half Dime, Large Cents, ect. Anyway, found this 1837 Hard Times Token. Obverse reads: Merchants Exchange Wall St N. York, and the reverse reads: Millions For Defence, Not One Cent For Tribute. It's the same size as a Large Cent, and as I pulled it from the dirt, I immediately recognized the reverse, since I had dug the same exact token back on New Years Eve 2006. The last two pictures are of an undug example in fine condition. Right now the token is boiling in peroxide, if it cleans up nice, I'll post new pictures.

great find. what an exciting place to dig. how did they use these tokens?

Token cleaned up better than I thought it would. Here's two new pictures; though with a little more cleaning after posting these pictures, the token looks a lot better, with more detail than how it appears in the pictures.

Nice looking token love the design. :o
I was going to say the high relief is still there.
Maybe an olive oil bath for a few days will do it justice.

Hard Times Tokens were privately struck large cent sized copper coins issued between 1832 to 1844 to serve as unofficial currency for small denomination coins during times of economic hardships - hence the term "Hard Times Token."

Awsome find fb, The large copper tokens of the mid and early 1800's are a true treasure in their own right but are highly under rated for some reason. ??? Congrats

I love hunting the woods myself for a number of reasons. It's amazing to me that, in our area, we can still find land where there is little or no human footprint of "modern" trash; areas where anything you dig, you know it's going to be old. Considering your incredible list of finds in "old reliable", I'd stick with it too :)

Awesome finds as usual!

HH!

I think everyone has those hunting areas that they can go back to when time is tight or just looking for that quick fix in this hobby.........Like me , I happen to go back to the two old Cellar hole site that we have been detecting for some time now. We still pull out some sort of goodie from time to time. Keep on Digging!!!!!!!!
