So am syked... ready to hit the beach dead low tide after this storm... I am telling ya all, somehow I am comming up with the money for a IN THE WATER detector...I stood there n watched a guy, with a minelab xcalabiubur...spell check..and he was reaping in stuff...he was only knee high in the water..... and alls I found was stuff in the dry sand...few coins..and one ugly paris hilton type metal ring that I wouldnt be caught dead wearing....... I have got to get a good water detector....

I know yes there is more good finds in the water but the sand has a lot of good finds also,but there 1 big diffrence, people hunting the water dig everything an most people hunting on the beach have a ID screen an try an not dig pull tabs, I hunt both the water an dry sand an dig it all an have pleany of nice finds from both areas.

I think they dig everything cause I don't think they find many pulltabs,just other junk,along with the good stuff.
Not like digging at the beach is as hard as digging hard dirt.
I made up my mind on getting an Excal soon as I can so I can get into the water and not worry about it getting wet,
I see ppl that own them , love them. Or if it rains you're good too.

Keep an eye out and you can get a good used one for a good price. Morris just sold his for $600, you saw what he found with it. Remember a good used Excal can always be sold for what you paid for it so it's not money lost, it is just money in a different long term investment is all.

I have 2 Excals and Sov GT that I use for beach hunting. If I get a solid signal swinging N/S and E/W I will dig the target.

I don't care if I dig a lot of pop tops and bottle caps, the gold and silver jewelry and comes comes with them. With my "backhoe" scoop digging is a breeze.

booty you need a detector that ignores black magnetic sand and salt water. NJ beaches are loaded with black magnetic sand. I don't know what detector you are using but my Garrett's goes crazy over black sand and so does my Compass.
If you're detector doesn't do this - hunt in dry sand only and take note of any large areas that seem to sound off. Dig down and check for area of black sand.
It may be just one foot wide and go for 10 feet. I've seen sections of beach where right on top of sand you can see black sand - they were 4-5 feet wide and
20-30 feet long.
After awhile you'll learn to avoid these areas and move to a more stable area on beach. Try lowering sensitivity when black sand is a serious problem. If that makes no difference - you just don't have a beach worthy machine. Minelab ignores both black magnetic sand and salt water - so it's a true land and beach machine. Good luck!

Today I used the M6 in beach mode...and I also have a gtp1350 which is not working well in the wet sand or low water, was told I Have to call garrett to see if a specific chip had beenput in mine...at this point I am so aggravated its not funny...
and here I am again.... possibly buying a sand shark....this is really getting on my nerves. As my MAIN hunting was supposed to be the beaches here..I just feel steered wrongly all the time...and feel stuck on dry land..

booty - make sure the machine you buy is a 'beach' machine. I can tell you for sure - Minelab is a beach machine. It completely ignores black sand and salt water in wet sand. If the machine does not do this - in NJ it is a land machine. I don't sell machines but I do use them. be careful who you listen too. Dealers hawk stuff on forums all the time! Talk to guys on beach forums - take note of what the most successful hunters use. Even White's Pulse Surf master has problems with black magnetic sand. The guy I hunted with last week had one and asked me to check a large area with black sand. He said his machine could not handle it properly.

Don't try to use a machine that will not do the job. You'll only end up very frustrated and give up...

I don't forsee selling one of my Excal's anytime soon.

I bought the second one because I wanted the best back up I could get, and if someone wants to hunt with me they get to use the best.

I have the original Beach Brute". ( 12 inches deep x 8.5 inches wide x 6.0 inches high) I had it moditified with a couple extra aluminum hand grasps welded on, one in front and one in rear, one in front makes it easier to lift up when I am in chest deep water, and one in back easer for dumping sand out.

I bought one of my Excals off of Ebay, the other off of the "for sale" board here, both arrived working and are still working perfectly. I got the scoop off of EBay for half of what they cost new. I just missed getting a SunSpot scoop for $50 off of a different site yesterday. I was the 2nd person to respond to the thread, 1st person beat me by 20 mins. >:(

If beaches are your main hunting grounds I would sell or try to return both the m6 and the garret and buy a Minelab sov gt and a copy of Clive Clynichs "Finding Gold, Silver and Coins with the Minelab Sovereign and Excalibur" then pocket the substantial difference.

Not sure who you are dealing with but I think they may have led you astray a tad.

Sov will be stable on the beach and reach deep while still having discrimination. You wont have to dig iron. Clives book will show you how to splash proof it for knee deep hunting in water among other things.

Don't get to envious of the water proof guys. First off water hunting is not as easy as it looks and depending on beach conditions that change on a daily basis the "good stuff" is not necessarily in the water. Since using the sov I still have my clad only days but a conservative estimate of 50 percent of hunts yielding some type of jewelry is more than fair on my beaches. The important thing IMO is stability in wet salt sand and above average depth. The sov provides both and at the same price as your m6. Added bonus is the true variable tone id with the sov. With ear training the tone ID on the sov is second to none includeing LCD detectors. The LCD is much more easily fooled than a good set of experienced ears.

update on the gtp1350 I called garrett yesterday, and gave em my serial number n all that stuff....mine already has the beach chip in it...was told to tighten up the cord.. really tight...and raise it up off the group a little higher when searching the sands.... if the cord is not wrapped properly ( over the top of the shaft) and if it has to big of a loop there, the coil will pick up the copper in the wires..so thats what garrett told me....

My backup scoop is a Zeek scoop from this forum, but he is no longer making them.

I missed getting that Sunspot scoop for $50 plus shipping off a different website by about 20 minutes couple days ago. :'(

A sunspot for $50 plus shipping would have been a steal..... I was looking at the Beach Brute 2 AT KELLYCO on Saturday. Looks nice, but I will continue to try to find it used for under a hundred. Used scoop is same as new scoop to me..........

The PI detectors work well on the beach or in the water at most places. They still have trouble in black sand too. Plus they love to find deep nails and pieces of iron. The Minelab is the only way to go. Excal for land or water and Sov. GT for land as it is not water proof.

Scoops should be of both types, screen for dry sand and huge stainless steel scoops for water wading. I used a few others and have settled on the Sunspot, Pic below. Website http://www.sunspotedm.com/beachscoops/index.html You won't need another.
