Here's one for the gun experts. Steel buttplate as found with 1 screw still hanging out of the bottom hole. Found on my property, 1790s farmhouse. I know this is a shot in the dark but can anyone recognise what make & what vintage gun this might have come from ? Only markings I see is a number 27 stamped on the backside. Thanks and HH

I'll go out on a limb and say it doesn't look like anything US or British military. More likely an independent maker. Good chance it was a Kentucky style rifle (or similar) or a fowling piece. It is consistent in style for early to mid 1800's. Here are some pics of a US Model 1863 buttplate for comparison.

Yes ..a mauser buttplate for sure more likely GEW 98 0r KAR 98-K98..the GEW rifle parts were commonly stamped with 2 numbers of the serial # ..there may be a faint crown above the number if a GEW..Nice find BTW.
