I got out recently one last time as it looks like the field hunting season has finally come to an end. I spent the majority of the time looking for a new trash pit at an early site that had given up some nice stuff about 3 years ago. Even though I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I did get into a few pottery shards, pipe stems and bowl, and a few buttons. First 3 pics show the results of that hunt.

Also, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to show a couple pics of some of my finds from the 2011-12 season. This was definitely an unexpectedly successful year for me. Even though I was only officially recognized with one banner find this year, I consider the whole season as banner as I was fortunate enough to have walked over many outstanding finds in the last few months. I ended the prior season without any real promising prospects, and wasn’t sure where I’d be hunting this year. But after a little research, great success with getting permissions, a lot of luck including a chance encounter with a property owner, and many hours in the field, I was able to recover a great quantity of mostly colonial artifacts, and some very nice quality relics and coins as well. My main objective, as always, is to recover as much colonial silver as possible and I did good in that department this year with 15 coins including another hammered sixpence. And some of the best buttons I’ve ever dug came to light as well including a beautiful early Corps of Engineers, and Kentucky & Virginia state seals. I was also able to finally recover 3 early dated wine bottle seals which had been on my most wanted list for quite some time. And to top it off I dug a gorgeous 1852 $1 gold piece and US boxplate. So although my year started out on a down note things turned around quickly. So don’t ever get discouraged as when you least expect it a killer site will pop up and your fortunes take a quick change for the better. Just takes a little hard work and persistence. Good luck to everyone!!

I would say you had a Banner year for sure, Congrats, and many more to come.

That's a great year worth already Bill. I know you'll be ready this fall after the harvest to add to that pile of goodies.I can hunt all year the way I go at it but this years most likely going to be slim with my dad bad off and all.Hard to be in the mood or even find time it seems.I'll have to try & sneak a couple hunts in soon as your post gives me the fever bad.
Take Care,
Pete,:hello:

you have had a great year so far! I love those pipes. congrats

Certainly was a great season. Anything you want to pass down, I'm here!!!! Or I can just pick!!!! Just saying! Now I get to drag you to the beach!!!!

Looks like a great year to me 8-)

What an incredible year for you Bill!! It's hard to pick my favorite since it's all amazing but I'm going to have to go with the Robert Carter seal. Nothing screams colonial Virginia more than a King Carter wine bottle seal!!

Makes me want to start using my detector more and panning less! Great finds...and numerous!

wow, those finds are choice! i found myself just staring at all that old, large silver. the other finds are amazing too. but man, i love silver.

I knew you were lurking out there Joey, and I also knew that seal was your favorite. I had been hoping to make one more trip this spring with Stan to that trash pit site, but it didn't work out. Will have to wait for next fall. Please keep me updated on the baby. Take care ..... Bill

Awesome - fantastic-spectacular!

You will be challenged to beat that year Biil. You scored high in the "button" dept, the "coin" dept, and the "non-metallic relic" dept. You were a little light in the "plate and buckle" dept though - haha! Just kidding, any of us would love to have a year like that!

Is it me or does that bottom half of a 1782 two reale? look like it would fit perfectly to that top half of the two reale to the bottom right of it? I'm looking at the cut in the middle of the face where two prongs stick out from the top half that would fit perfect into the two indents of the bottom half...

Congratulation!!

Someone pointed that out to me a while back when I had posted the coins I'd dug from the spill area. You can see from the pic below that it is indeed a perfect match. The 2 pieces were found about 50 ft apart. I've dug well over 50 cut pieces of silver and this is the first time I've found a matching pair. Nice catch just the same ..... Bill

Thanks Steve. You haven't been doing bad yourself lately. Hope to see you posting some more colonial goodies soon.

Bill, I have to say I look forward to reading each and every one of your posts. You have had a tremendous year this year. Quite a first rate collection from spring that spans every department--silver, gold, colonial, and military.

Fantastic stuff, and thanks so much for sharing the type of posts I need to see to stoke my motivation.

Cheers,

Buckles

Way to go Bill - as I like to say, Virginia still has plenty of goodies in the ground!
