one more thread today! lead stamp seal with words

empting out my pocket of my jacket to find all the nails and stuff I dug then I forgot I found a lead ball, figuring it was like the rest of my musketball i sat it aside, then realized it was flat and round, I know im that dumb to over look it, but I rinsed it off and see words and some kind of seal, it was found at my colonial site, the words I can make out is NEM, which I figure is men.

What was a sack seal used for?

Can you clean it off any more to make it more legible? They lead seals were used used to show that a product had been inspected before shipment. Kind of like a tamper evidence seal of today. If you can make out the letters on it, you could probably find out what and who it was used for.

the only letters I can make out is NEM there is a space then O, it's no bigger on the sides, i thing I chipped some off accidentally cleaning it, it just flaked so I probaly did not do the damage

I think it is a sac seal. Used to close a sac of seed sent from a particular supplier. In Britten, The flax seals are prized finds and were supplied from Russia for flax. If it were a wax seal, the letters would be in reverse so you could read them when impressed on the wax. Great find and save.

well I figured that NEM was men backwards so I figured that it was a wax seal, it does have a circle with some design but I don't want any damage to occur cleaning

I got a new letter one it so it now has P NEM and then a circle with three dots in the middle

I think the letters are correct as seen in the picture. If stamped they would then be reversed. The P, N, and E are facing the right direction for reading the seal as is. Blowing the picture up the "M" looks more like a R to me.

Nice little lead bale seal.
That's usually a company or even an individual factory workers name on that side. Is there numbers on the back? There will often be numbers on the other side signifying the weight or length of the material in the being shipped.
