But my find of a 1936 Buffalo nickel reminded me of a question I want to ask: how do you guys clean Buffalo nickels, the three I have found are all very dark, can you clean them in a tumbler with clad or is there a better way. Thanks for your help.

Nothing like a good find when you only got a few minutes to detect!!

Use a 50/50 solution of Lime Away and water (mix it well), let it sit in there for about 20 minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush, and if it needs to sit longer stick it back in. Just be careful and watch that you don't leave it in so long that the copper starts showing.

Post a before and after picture when you're done!

Hey, Ray, thanks for the info, am in the process of a cleaning right now. I can't post any pics, as I have no idea how, but if I find something really big I do intend to learn and show off a little. LOL

Well, I have given it a couple of soaks, and it isn't a dark red/brown anymore...............it is more of a dull mauve color. I don't think I will dare do it again or I might take off the nickel.

How to post a pic... in a nutshell: Take a pic with a digital camera. It must be a pic of no more than around 320 kbyt's. Get it to your desktop. Make your text post. At the bottom of your post, you are given the opportunity to ADD IMAGES. Left click on BROWSE. Click on the DESKTOP shown on the left (Vista users). Double-click on the image you wish to post. The location you click on will show up in the "box." Then click on POST. Now just wait till screen puts you out of post screen. This may be second nature to those that have posted many pics but I hope it has helped you out. I use a Mavica that uses a floppy. I can get a pic from camera to Tnet in less than a minute. Good luck. TTC

I clean my coins by using a glass that has a combination of water, salt and vinegar.I then plug in a charger with a alligator clip hooked to a spoon and the other on the coin, then placing them in the water. It really works. Not kidding ya! They may come out a little pink at first(LOL), but it works.Just take some steel wool to them.

Here's a video of how it works, except with different ingredients.
