The botanical definition of the term “herb” is an annual
or a perennial that has a non-woody stem.

But culturally, the word “herb” usually covers those
plants that give specific benefits and uses to us
human beings.

This not only includes plants that can be used to
season and flavor food, but also those that
possess cosmetic, aromatic, and
medicinal properties.

Since most of our uses for herbs involve ingestion,
we should only utilize organic herbs since these
were grown without the use of chemical-based
pesticides and fertilizers, which could prove
harmful to our health in the long run.

Below are some uses of herbs.

Seasoning and Flavoring

Fresh organic herbs are often used as seasonings to enhance
the flavor of almost any kind of food.

Basil, rosemary, oregano, and thyme are popular organic herbs
that are widely used in Italian cuisine.

Cilantro and Marjoram, on the other hand, are commonly used
in Mexican food and are usually served along with a lot
of green onions.

Asian cooking features many kinds of exotic herbs
like bok choy and galangal.

Medicinal Herbs

Some herbs have medicinal properties that can be used to cure
certain ailments and promote better health naturally.

The use of herbs for medicinal purposes goes back several
thousands of years.

Long before there were over-the-counter drugs, man was using
medicinal herbs to treat a wide variety of illnesses and
to maintain overall health.

Unlike prescription drugs that come with a warning on their labels
about possible side effects, medicinal herbs won’t cause
your body harm when taken in the right amount.

As such, it would be better to reduce our dependence on
man-made drugs and utilize natural
medicinal herbs instead.

Here are some of the most commonly used medicinal herbs:

· Aloe Vera – usually used for burns;

· Echinacea – enhances the immune system and treats colds,
sore throat, and flu;

· Gingko Biloba – relieves headache and depression;
improves blood flow;

· Ginger – helps prevent morning sickness and nausea and
soothes stomach cramps;

· Rosemary – alleviates the pain of arthritis and sprains

· Senna – a natural laxative that alleviates constipation

Herbal Tea

Unlike traditional tea that is made from leaves from the tea plant
(Camellia sinensis), herbal teas are made from flowers,
fruits, roots, leaves, or grains.

Herbal teas do not have caffeine unlike traditional tea, so they are
usually taken at night in order to induce sleepiness.

However, there are some herbal teas that are invigorating
such as ginseng tea.

Potpourri

Dried herbs are typically placed in a breathable bag or a bowl
as potpourri to add fragrance to a room.

The best herbs to use for potpourri are lemon verbena,
lavender, chamomile, sage, thyme, and rosemary.

Whether you’re going to use herbs for their pleasant aroma,
medicinal properties, or simply just for their flavor,
it would be better to go organic and to choose
herbs that were grown with
no harmful pesticides.

There are many local suppliers or farmers’ cooperatives
in your area that you may visit to get your supply
of fresh, organic herbs.

You may also opt to grow your own right in your own backyard.
