Out of the blue and into the black!!

Simply a fantastic day, perfect conditions sunny blue skies 75°with a slight offshore breeze, low tide in the afternoon! Went to a beach that has extreme black sand. I don’t know where it ends because I haven’t dug down deep enough to find out! Not many hunters hunt this area. Well today I did for about2 1/2 hrs🏴‍☠️☠️🏴‍☠️

Did you use the Manticore there? And if so, how did the Manti handle those heavily mineralized sands?

For me and my black sand environment, one of my hunting partners uses the Manticore 👍🏻 with the small coil. She does very well. Also see does not like Digging deep, it’s too much work! Me and my 900 did great too, a good foot to 16inches in black sand mix with blonde sand and getting heathy hits!

In general, all metal detectors don't work well at all in those streaks or swirls of black sand in the beach.
It is magnetic sand, Magnetite is a black iron-bearing mineral that has its own magnetic charge.
If sweeping over a dense patch with a multi-frequency machine, manual ground balance over the dark swirl itself and dropping manual sensitivity by 2–3 notches often calms the coil down enough to pull targets out of the streak.
And comeback to auto GB.
It is so hard to me to give you right setting. Try this may help you.

Over black sand, I haven't had problems at all using my Sovereign Elite, except maybe some loss of depth. And now that I have a Dual Field PI, I can use that over black sand as well. What I normally do is to run my Sov in discrim mode first, to take advantage of auto iron rejection. The Sov's threshold will null over iron, so I use that first to see if I'm getting a lot of nulls, i.e., lot of iron present. If there's not a lot of iron, I'll break out the PI and run that over black sand.

Sovereign "GT" and "Elite" are outdated metal detectors, those metal detectors I have used them many years ago, still I have them. If you have a little competition, you would come back empty hands.

Let me clear with you my friend, I am completely right, swinging a Sovereign "GT" or "Elite" on a heavily hunted beach today is like bringing a classic car to a modern drag race.
While the Sovereign series made history with Minelab's broad band spectrum (BBS) technology, penetrating wet salt sand like nothing else in its era, the landscape of metal detecting has completely shifted. If someone sweeps over a high-value target with a modern machine right before you, the Sovereign simply won't have the speed or signal separation to compete for what's left behind.
I rememberd myself in the first time I used “GT” I was in shock the deep that reached it.
Those Sovereigns are still legendary engineering pieces, but using them in a competitive spot means leaving fine gold behind for whoever comes behind you with a modern rig!

Excalibur here my friend Hamid, for the last 18 years, 14 of those years My Excaliburs/BBS tech has dug more gold each year then any of the new machines (per hunter) in the Chesapeake Bay and Ocean City Maryland. Those new machines would be the D2s, many Manticores, all of the Noxs, etc. They are Great machines but the BBS machines can hang and do as well if setup correct... other then micro pieces of gold, that area BBS is very weak. As far as trashy beaches where there are multiple targets,......... that is rare here on the dry beach and in the water. On land yes, separation speed is needed here on the dirt/land. Also I would agree for those hunting the drysand the new machines are much better as far as weight but in the water where most of the gold is here... the dinosaur rules..

And there are very few of them left, most now swing a modern detector
On many of my post over the past years you will see my recommendations..

Buy those Noxs.. then more recent Buy those Manticores! I say that for one reason, saltwater is the great equalizer..

So buy those New age machines!!

Thanks for your reply Hamid, you made some very valid points. I have no doubt that some of today's detectors have progressed well over the years. But I'm an old school, twist the knobs kinda guy, I like simple, and the Sovereign Elite has served me well over the last 15 years with my Detech 12x10 & 15x12 SEF Butterfly coils. My Sov was very deep 15 years ago and is still very deep today. And last year, I was able to add a Dual Field PI to my arsenal, along with an X-Terra Elite.

I've hardly touched the X-Terra, but I'll have to force myself to try it out on the beaches, it might surprise me. But usually when I hit the beaches, I'll grab my Sovereign & Dual Field, will use the Sov on the wet in discrim mode, so I can get auto iron reject & variable pitch tones. If I'm getting a lot of threshold nulls, there's a lot of iron present, so I'll continue using the Sov but usually will switch to all-metal mode then double check signals in discrim mode. But if I don't get a lot of threshold nulls, that tells me there's not a lot of iron present, so I'll switch over to the PI. Both the Sov & PI detect deeper than my arms feel like digging, especially since I'm much older now than I was 15 years ago, lol.

I’m so strongly agree with you my friends, Transitioning to multi-frequency technology back in 2011 was a massive turning point for the hobby. Before that, dealing with highly mineralized wet salt sand or black sand with a single frequency was a constant battle against false signals. Moving to multiple frequencies simultaneously changed the game, it allowed the machine to see right through the ground conductivity and target the deep, heavy targets that others were missing.
But there something is very special to discover in Multi IQ.
