Great find. Did you find any sign of firepits and encampment?

Stone tools and flint flakes and shells no fire pit tho some of the stone tools were heat altered I've been told there are pictures of tools I found here on another thread just look for my name. Grobb28

It might work out better to consolidate into one thread... since everything is coming from the same place. Everyone will get a clearer picture and the info in the responses you receive will be more well rounded when all the information is available in one place

Gator what is your opinion on best places to dig around that overhang ... In it. ? How deep to dig? Where to dig I need advice anything will help

Did you crawl into that tiny hole? Not me, no way.

Well..Mabey I can help.
There is a few different ways to go about it. Keep in mind where you put the dirt you have removed since you don't want to have to move it again to dig where it was. If your not using a sifting screen I would start.
Each shelter will be different based on how dry it is and where..which way the prevailing wind comes from...that sort of thing.
I would start just outside the dripline and work back into the shelter moving material out and to the side of the opening as I went. The fire pit is often close to the entrance so the smoke will exit and the radiant heat fills the shelter and reflects back off the stone.
I'm sure you have..but try to look at it from the standpoint of yourself needing to survive in it...where would you be when it's windy...raining...ect. where would you sit to make tools for tomorrow's hunt.
This is just how I look at things ....Mabey it will help you some.
One last thing....go slowly and pay attention to what the ground is telling you. You can pick up on things like soil changes and burnt material..ect..and how the artifacts are associated with it. GOOD LUCK. And remember those items and the info that goes with them will never return there again...after many centuries at rest.... take good care of them. And if any bone material is found that should be saved make sure to preserve it or it may crumble away to nothing. A simple soak in a mixture of white glue and water is often all that is needed.

There's a very good possibility that as material filled in a lot of artifacts were pushed to the back. The floor of the shelter more than likely use to be alot lower than it is now.

Well I hope my input helped... but I don't really agree with simply treasure hunting for Flint.... so to speak. You're on your own there.
You could be destroying shell pendants.. beads of bone and shell. bone blade handles.. perforating tools...the list goes on. Like I said before...... these things are a finite.. they will be gone forever. I do understand why archaeologists take the stance they do when it comes to amateur digging.

I agree with gatorboy, there is a "wealth" of onfo at your find- the shells' were not only used for jewelry but were to barter with (called wampum) and certain shells' were worth more than others'. Along with pelts',hides and blankets this was 'money' to the great nations of early times. Aside from that I would look up and around above the site as it has been my experience that there quite often is more than just one used area there. Look for a possible cache site- items that were heavy or bulky and ofter used would be hidden , to be available on a return trip/visit. Good hunting. Let us know how it goes. yelnif...

I agree with all if that too but I don't agree with him assuming in a dumb ass and trashing everything I find ! I look at everything and have a damn good eye

You're doing great keep it up.

Nice Find...
I found a Over hang years ago very similar to your find that had some interesting markings and charing on the walls in a side are near the overhang was what looked like a small tunnel cut above it that went back to a point I heard a very load roaring of water and the tunnel looked to be purposly blocked with rock... im not sure how old or who cut the tunnel but the over hang was natural. did not get to do any further exploration of the area but one day I will make my way back. Hope you get to go back and at the very least take more photos and explore the surounding area for more....:icon_thumright:
