I agree with gatorboy, there is a "wealth" of onfo at your find- the shells' were not only used for jewelry but were to barter with (called wampum) and certain shells' were worth more than others'. Along with pelts',hides and blankets this was 'money' to the great nations of early times. Aside from that I would look up and around above the site as it has been my experience that there quite often is more than just one used area there. Look for a possible cache site- items that were heavy or bulky and ofter used would be hidden , to be available on a return trip/visit. Good hunting. Let us know how it goes. yelnif...

Grobb28- I do not think gatorboy was being a :censored:! His info as well as mine may be basic to those of us who who have explored, but to a novice this info is what you asked for in your original post. So don't take offence- I would have replied the same way gator boy did.

your photo's reveal a lot- for one: multiple sites. just a clue. yelnif...

I wondered about the different types of flint I was told some I have we're heat altered and what is fauna ??

native americans and ancients used heat/ fire to break down large flint rock into more manageable sized chards, which they would knapp into what you have found. Fauna is the vegetation/ trees,brush,moss- green growing. yelnif...

Yes all the lichen on rocks around the area there is tons if it some serious age

Heat treating...
Flint actually holds moisture. heat treating removes that moisture making the stone much easier to fracture.

Is it possible the artifacts could of already been in the dirt at the time of a fire and then got heat treated by mistake?

Yup. I mentioned that earlier. If they dug a hole for a fire. Bits and pieces sure.

Flora = vegetation

Fauna = animal life

Good catch bravo- my goof- flora is what I meant-thanks
grobb28- in pic#5 you can tell that the shelter used to be larger with more overhang, and it broke off. Where the present floor is it is actually at the level or above the top surface of the broken overhang. The floor is actually 6' to maybe 10' down. yelnif...

Interesting ..

overhang shelter is now a sealed cavern.#$%

Up until 1986? we had a beautiful shelter- would have sheltered 40/50 souls. Multiple stains on ceiling from multiple fire pits-some OLD , some not so old. Anyway, that winter we received a lot of cold rain, then we got 22 days of hard freeze, then 18" of heavy snow. We were w/o elec. for 8 days. I was back in the area in '08 and found that @ 30' of the overhang had broken off and for all intentional purposes I would have to take up hard rock mining to get in. It fell straight down and was now @ a 12' thick door and me with no key or rock hammer. Don't know for sure that the unusual winter of '86 caused it or not- just glad I wasn't under when it happened. Know the shelter was old as we have found dino evidence.
grobb28 You have a treasure there- take care of it. yelnif... :notworthy::hello2::occasion14:

Welcome to the site!

What state ? I'm In northern oklahoma

Thanks rock- I'm new to tnet and have been on the MD'ing forum here trying to glean enough info so I can decide which MDer to buy. Think it will be a Vaquero as I want to also detect a recent undisturbed CW site I found. A CW musket stuck through a tree- horizontal. Rumor's of numerous battles/ skirmishs' in the area.
Grobb28- your probably in my area- I'm in ne okla. yelnif...
