I think the article is a bunch of hogwash written by a mentally ill person actually. Read the part on how it was discovered. He was on the ridge under a tree and decides to chase rabbits. If rabbits dart past you, by the time you get up, they will disappear. Even if you some how caught up to them (impossible) he then says they went into a nearby hole. That suggests the entrance was on the top of he palisades and he mentions salt water which would be at the base of the cliffs. Nonsense

1860's he probably Been Chasing rabbits & caught few back then.
There s some things about 19th century people that People today can't do.

could be a euphemism for trackig and shooting them too

Also if ya read between the Lines, The area was used for Recreation
by all ages . Should be some coins there

all I Know on the Rest of the story, I Can't prove he Lied
till someone searches the entire Palasades & Can be trusted not to lie

Or find the Exact Spot Where it ain't and hasn't been tampered with

Interesting read, but we all have to recognize what news consisted of back then. Not far from what we have today, just more innocent and less malicious than today.
