Hey everyone, hope you are staying safe and healthy out there. Last year I found a number of fire damaged items from a ship on a river shore by a colonial fort at same depth (about 5 inches) in same area- 3 square nails/spikes, one of which looks like a rose head tip. Then this bit of metal sculpture? For the longest while it sat on my workbench as an encrusted lump. In quarantine boredom, I decided to chisel off the encrustation carefully and what emerged surprised me. Clearly a fingernail or toenail and strange divots that look like it could be some kind of grip. There is a faint line down the side as if it was where one half of a mold was, so 2 halves... it’s very heavy, magnetic ... not sure the type of metal. This piece fascinates me. I wish I knew what the whole object was once!
