Relic Hunting
A couple weeks ago I went to a site I hunted last Winter where I found 3 bullets with my AT Pro... I took the MXT this time and she shined through. This was a old school house my Grandfather's Dad went to as a boy... and convieniently, it's on a civil war wagon trail in which the troops had skirmishes through the area. Unfortunately, I can't go back until later this winter because hunting season has started and the owner of the property said I can come back next year during the winter... this was a back-up site. I was planning to go to the house (abandoned) in which my Grandfather's Dad was born (pre-civil war house), but the owner wasn't home that day, and he will only let me detect if he's home. That's another site I want to hit soon... also on that civil war wagon trail.

Behind the school I started my grid (the front is littered with trash that I will be removing this winter). The first signal I dug there after 15 minutes of hunting was the same noise as a piece of can slaw would give, which I was finding tons of. Only an inch deep a 1920 buffalo pops out. Definetely dates to the school house, my Grandfather's Dad could've lost that. Then about 15 minutes later I dug my first bullet for the day... 2 minutes later another one pops out. I'm gridding to the right of where the school sits now and I'm getting bullet after bullet. I also pull out an enfield nose cap with all the lead. I get another bullet signal about 2 feet from a Nose-cast dropped three ringer... I dug it and it was harder to find than most of the bullets I'm pinpointing today. I took it out live on video (because I thought I was live digging another bullet) and low and behold a beautiful confederate Block "Lined I" infantry button arises from the dirt. Not something I was expecting. I was so happy and excited that during the camera I said it was a Script I. :laughing7:

I dug another Nose cast 3 ringed bullet two feet away from the other Nose cast and CS button, I was thinking they could've been dropped at the same time. I kept digging bullets after I got the button and since it got dark, I had to quit for the day. I got 13 bullets that day... a personal best for me.

I went back the next day and went to the left side of the school... not as much as the right side but I was still getting plenty of targets. I dug a WWI cuff button (school house find), my first Colt pistol bullet, a couple brooches, some over all buttons, an enfield trigger guard end, and a sword hanger. Can't wait to go back.

The other day, I went to a spot my relative owns across from his business. He said a guy hit it a few years ago and found "cut Spanish coin", "coins" and buttons". He wasn't lying either! The last guy hunted this site HARD!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a turn of the century house ... But had a colonial house right in its front yard looooong before it. Targets were so sparse, I thought the yard was landscaped and after about two hours I was about to give up because all I found was a Rivet. I got a faint signal 8" deep a thick flat button pops out. I start to realize the guy who was here before me knew exactly what he was doing and was good at it. I walk about 5' from the button and get a quarter signal. About 6" down I see a silver rim. A 1936 merc. Always welcome no matter how old. The soil was soft and sandy which made for easy and pleasing to be digging. I then got a 8" button back to a general service button. Too bad it's missing the front but I was impressed with the MXT's depth. After a while I worked around the iron patch of the colonial homesite. There's also unusual depressions in the yard. I got a solid wheat penny signal down at 6" not expecting more than a memorial I dug it and right on the very tip of the plug a small thin piece of silver fell... quarter cut Spanish!!!!!!! 1724 (so happy I got the date) pistareen! My oldest dated coin yet. Yay! I hunted a bit longer and dug a civil war bullet at 10"+ (deeper than the trx) …got a few buttons... Some other odds and ends... And camp lead pieces. The wheats and advertising watch fob are from a different site I hunted for a few minutes before the colonial site.

The next day I knocked on a old house with two symmetrical chimney's on either side, to me that screams pre civil war. I got a quick permission but could only hunt for 30 minutes. I'll be back tho. The homeowner told me it was 1918 but I didn't believe it. My first target was a early wheat and then right after that at 11", I got a beautiful colonial horse tack buckle. Nearby I get a flat button and some aluminum trash. I get a +83 signal at only 3" deep and it turned out to be a matron large cent. I think it's 1836 but it's tough. Just like the Spanish coin. I also got a steel top thimble (early 1800s) and a couple other odds and ends. Only thirty minutes and I think there's a lot more there.

Thanks for looking and HH!

Fantastic digs, Isaac! Love the colonial silver and the Civil War relics.

Very nice relics and coins. The I button is killer too. You got a bunch of good stuff. Wow.

That's some seriously crazy relic hunting youngster , good to see your finds and how you use your experience with different sites .
Living in Virginia does have it's advantages over most of the coastal states ....... sorta shows with all the layers of artifacts . :icon_scratch:

Almost left this out , Great pics as well. 8-)

What an incredible pile of goodies!

That's a heck of a lot of relics Issac. Congrats on the cut Spanish and the Block I. If I'm not mistaken, I see an Enfield nose cap among all those bullets too.

Awesome Job!

Incredible finds Isaac! Those group shots make me drool. That CS button is just awesome. Really like that cut Pistareen you dug too. I cant see the side with the date, but based on how I see its cut with the crown, it looks like you got the FULL date! I dug a 1722, cut just like yours this past spring. From what I've been told, it is very unusual to see them cut this way. Typically, they were cut along the + in the back to make equal quarters... when doing that, the date gets split in half. Awesome finds!

Thanks Outdoor, I was looking at some of your threads the other day and I couldn't control my drooling. LOL. It is an atypical way to cut it... I was surprised by the design when I rubbed it off... it was cut in between each of the cross lines, maybe to make 8th's in the future?
I think it's 1724 at least. The 4 is easy to make out but the two, seven, and one are very faint and worn off. realeee.webp

Maybe it's cut like that (equally so the cross line is in the middle of the cut piece) in order to make 8th's of the reale. I want to go back to this site one more time, it's so quiet though unfortunately.

Thank you Isaac! I think I just get lucky most of the time. ha

I don't know much about cut colonial silver, but Bill D. sure does and hes the one that mentioned these are cut odd. I'm no expert here, and I haven't seen much cut silver, but yours is the only other one I've seen cut like mine.

You might be right about them being cut into 1/8ths in the future, however I had another theory. Yours, much like mine, appears to be a few degrees shy of 90 degrees. Perhaps they quartered these pistareens a few degrees shy and were left with a little slice of silver to pocket! Just a thought. If they cut them on the cross, it would be harder to steal a bit of silver.

Both of ours appear to be just a bit shy of a 1/4 pistareen!

Those colonial looters. :laughing7: Even the colonial people tried to take advantage of you back then. ;) You're probably right on that, I've heard of people clipping coppers to do just that. Maybe this was a way blacksmiths who cut these coins would get a little extra tip or tax back then? Yours is cut more crudely than mine. Mine was probably by a blacksmith while yours may have been home-made. I love these little coins, they are so interesting.

Wow! what a pile of finds! and Congrats on the cut silver. HH!

Thanks, the button was huge on my bucket list as well!!! That's also my oldest dated coin yet... so it made me super happy!!! I'm astounded that there is 1600s stuff laying around in MS!!! The research you've done is not only impressive, but inspiring!

Isaac,

Cut Spanish silver and complete military button both on the same hunt....sweet and you've got enough lead to raise your own militia unit.

Regards + HH
