Because you only had the date, and not the patent number, I searched through every US patent issued on Sept. 2, 1856. (Over 30 were issued on that date.) The closest match I can find for your "buckle" is patent #15,666, which is also for a buckle...but it only somewhat resembles yours, having an oval-shaped slot but no curved tongue. I'm wondering now if it might go to a bra rather than suspenders, having had some of these show up in image searches, but couldn't find a close-up of the hardware. However I must now go to sleep... Maybe it'll come to me in my dreams.
