pegmatite, feldspar veins? no clue.

Can someone shed some light on what these veins are? Possible gems/pockets?

Is that actual rock? Do an acid test also to rule out calcite - ordinary vinegar would do. If it bubbles and fizzles - (white) calcite.

My thought exactly, my first thought from the roots, exposed frozen soil bank, can't say "perma-frost", I think the pic is from NC not AK, but taken in Jan. could still be frozen soil and (ice),
or maybe leached chemicals from illegal dumping a hundred years ago, or......hmm, don't know?
