Pentagon thing-a-ma-jig

Found this yesterday while hunting a old bridge crossing which was also the site of a skirmish during the civil war. Is this from a uniform or some type of leather decoration ? It's sitting on a nickle for size reference. Thanks in advance for looking!

It's a harness boss. See my reply #13
