Hi everyone,

Am doing the happy dance today ;D First gold, first ZAR coinage, Best find.

Went to a old Boer war site with a friend, where the artillery were set up for battle in the Boer war.
It is a great site made up of walls about 1.5 metres high that the troops used to run around in. The whole structure is in a horseshoe shape.
Anyway, I got a signal and dug down and found this coin. As soon as I picked it up, I saw that it was gold because of the colour. Something I learnt from this site is to never rub a coin, so I waited till I got home and washed it in soapy water. (that was very difficult)

Gold Kruger 1 Pond, 0.2353 Ounces Gold, Value +- R2000

I found another bullet case and a small piece of pottery, and that was it......

I know for a fact that this site has been gone over by many others in the past, as this was told to me by another guy that did detecting. So right from the start I knew that if I found something, there would not be much.
But I have learnt from Tnet that a site is never stripped of it's finds.

Anyway, here are pics of the coin and the site, hope you enjoy them.

God bless
Peter

He may have died on that spot. :(

Wonderful Peter! You deserve it too! 8)

I more happy that you found this than if I did myself.

That shows that we never know what's to be found at any site. I've had many surprises myself over the years.

Peter my man, that is one tremendous find! You didn't have to find anything else that day, that made a perfect day by itself! Congrats and nice to see you on the banner! ;D ;D ;D

That's a beautiful coin!

It's the kind of find that elevates our hobby to a higher level.

Congratulations on joining the GOLD coin club!

Thank you everyone for all the kind words ;D

Here is a drawing I made off more or less what the site looks like. I hope you can visualise it with no problem...... (at least the picture should help also).

Layout.jpg

The site is facing east on the firing side, facing down hill to the then empty bushland. I would imagine that there was a problem behind them as it is uphill, the enemy could have come over the hill, and also from the left side, as there is a bit of a rise there also. It is a bit of a funny site strategy wise... ???

I am looking at going back there tomorrow (8/9/07), but I am coming down with flue again, the 5th time this year, so I will see.

God bless
Peter

Peter,
Get yourself some Vitamin C and zinc.
Take it easy, there isn't any reason to hurry.
That site will be there when you go back.
Just be well my friend, we want to hear more....
if you are sick we don't get to hear more.

Take care,
Thom

Thanks Old Dog, I will look after myself...

Hi guys and Gals,

I found this picture of Paul Kruger, that is the chap who's head is on the coin ::) I thought it might go well with this topic.

Peter finds Oom Paul, exellent.
Sorry Cornelius Pond is Pound in english if it was in english it would not be genuine.
Seker as jy die taal praat dan sal jy weet (translated) If you spoke the language you would understand viva Afrikaaners and congratulations again Peter

hello vacavala, Baai Dankie for that.... I did not catch what Cornelius was talking about ::) I thought he was saying that the coin is not real :o ;D
I take it that you lived in South Africa at some time? My Afrikaans is not the best, I know a fair amount, but not to have a major conversation with it ;) I am originally British...

God bless
Peter

Thanks for the cool pictures of the site and the history! Are you going to sell the coin or keep it? A gold coin would be hard to part with but at the same time it would pay for your detector or another one. It would be a hard choice for me. I think my best find is only worth about 150.00 and it is worth way more to me. ;)

hey Peter
Born and bred in Durban moved to the states 13 years ago, dont worry about the afrikaans I'm a soutpiel anyway..John
