Certainly looks like an H or an A

If it was me, I'd soak it in a 25% water and 75% white Elmers glue mixture for a few days then air dry it. It will stabilize the button and bring out more detail too.

That's an interesting method of preservation. A few days? I got to ask, what exactly does that accomplish or do for the button?

It is a different button, good luck with the id

It allows the glue to work into the pores. If you notice, the pewter fractures along the edges. After the glue dries it binds the oxidized parts button together. It also adds some fullness to the surface and has aided in seeing some of the detail, much like wetting a worn coin and angling it in light to see detail.

I understand the use of the glue , but if left for "days", I feel the water would quickly evaporate and the glue would cure, and then the result would not be what one would expect.
I would like to see some examples of your buttons done as you described , with the OPs approval of course ,personally I feel that your method would be just as effective from just a few moments in the glue solution; but I do realize everyone has their own tried and proven methods, no doubt, I just wondered more about the time frame

looks like a artillery pewter button from the rev. war..

any button masters please chime in.......i cant find anything, maybe just a private initial button?

Do you think it might look like THIS?

Not sure anyone is seeing what I am seeing.... which is some type of design below a crown. Something makes me think Spanish, maybe because if it's a letter below the crown it's done in the same style as Spanish buttons... but I don't give much credibility to that thought. It does not strike me as British though.

I see it as more of a feathered "A"... like THIS

i found the button 2 days ago its under the 1739 irish half penny, i found every item in this pic in a 10x10 area nothing else around for 100 yrds or so where there is a cellar hole, there is 2 buckles 4 pewter buttons and some lead, maybe a trigger guard, one button is semi octagon, maybe some of these items can make sense of this button. thank you
