I went back to the spot I found the barber quarter and dandy buttons last time and had some more luck. I found mostly the usual type of stuff like jack knives, penny’s and musket balls. The best finds of the bunch was a wwii royal canadian engineer dome button, a 1941 silver dime, a Snyder bullet and my favourite find of the day was over where I found the dandy buttons last time. It is a large pewter colonial shoe buckle. Usually pewter doesn’t hold up well underground but I found this one deep in super muddy swampy ground. The lack of oxygen must have helped preserve it so well. When I was first cleaning it up at home I thought I had a tarnished sterling silver one. Still a complete pewter one is still a rare find in my books and I’m happy to get it. The pics don’t do it justice at all. Thanks for looking! [emoji16][emoji106]

Good to know. Ill still take that close up of the nick to see what you think! [emoji16][emoji106]

That's a beautiful shoe buckle. Are you sure it's pewter and not a tombac material. Just looks too nice to be pewter.

Here’s some quick pics of the silver colour nick I accidentally put in it with my shovel if I helps at all identify the composition for sure...

Thanks for the info. So far it seems good and stable. I may have been wrong doing it but I rubbed a little mineral oil on it just in case and then wiped most of it right off just to keep a thin layer. I did that to a pewter button before and it didn’t seem to harm it at all. I ’m thinking it’s for sure got to be pewter as well. I seen those makers initials on it as well. Maybe a dumb question and I’m half asleep but what do you mean by suspension case???

Here's two views of a suspension case used for storing a Native American pewter pipe.

The enclosed artifacts is suspended between inert plastic membranes that keep the artifact safe and secure.

WoW, man, you killed it! :icon_thumright:

That's a really nice buckle Kiddo. I was wondering myself about those, pewter or tombac.I found a site two years ago with many.At first i was sure of pewter because this was common then. But tombac also. Some tombac have less arsenic and are'nt so shinny. The only thing i'm thinking now is to find a place and have it check.I could bring a part of a broken one and they would find out. Just wonder where they could do it cheap or free. Mine have such small detail, thinking just wearing it a couple of time it would broke. One was silver plated can you put silver on both metal .Mystery....

The only thing with mine is I cut into by accident and it was kind of soft and peeled shinny inside and a silver colour. I thought tombac is a harder material and would most likely crack instead of peel? Am I wrong or is pewter usually on the softer side of metals?

Beautiful buckle save. Nice display idea for the pipe. Thanks for sharing the pics and the information. Congrats on the buckle save.
