I found this Pewter fenial near some Confederate earthworks in Dallas GA. The square base measures 3/4 of an inch, and it is about 1" tall. I think it is pewter, it is non magnetic and where the dirt is flaking off it is black underneath. Does anyone know what it is?

My first guess would be that it was one of several on something..for hanging tools or other items from.

I have found them with the square bottom like yours. I always called them a finial but I sure could be wrong. If they are not finials I sure hope someone can give us an ID.
