I have been so busy I almost forgot I owned a metal detector but today I had a few hours free so I took advantage. Earlier in the year I found what I thought was a cellar hole but didn't have my detector with me at the time so was unsure till today. The problem is I had to cross a little brook to get there and after the rain we had last night I basically had to swim across. Soaking wet I went on through the thick growth and started in an area that was t too grown in. After a while I just started bush whacking to get in closer and I'm glad I did. Still cannot get the whole area so will have to wait till late fall to see what else is around. After not swinging for so long it felt great finding all the history I found today. The first signal I got was a sweet sounding high tone. Almost certain to be a coin I dug out a bit and checked the pile. Now a mid tone a nice decorated tombac comes out. A bit confused i re checked the hole and that high tone was still there. Dug some more and could see a nice shinny silver. Outs comes the 1821 dime. After that I immediately started to grid the area and the rest followed. Lots of buttons. Tombacs, pewter, dandy, and flat. The coins were mostly from one little area. Maybe within 10'-15' from one another. KG l no date, 1787 connecticut copper, and a classic head LC. Some nice relics mixed in also. A shoe buckle frame, an ox knob, 2 very nice pewter spoons and what I think is a coronation medal? It looks like it says "crowned king of England S 22 1761". One of the last finds of the quick hunt was a Pewter USA button. Measures about 18-19mm and was so shinny compared to the other pewters I found today I thought it was silver for a while. Would love to hear people input on the USA button. Another interesting piece was a large pewter button with "EA" stamped on the face. That's about enough rambling for me. Hope everyone enjoys.

Are you kidding me? That's a continental army button and in phenomenal shape! In my opinion about the best button you could hope to find anywhere! That belonged to one of George Washingtons regulars in the revolution. Beats the heck out of a GW and has been on my wish list for a long time. Nice coin too, but the button wins. Banner all day on that one!
Yeah, it's a rare one.Doesn't get much more early American Military then that.I would imagine a button like that is on every relic hunters wish list,I know I have always wanted to fine one.How do you vote for a banner?

Greylock that button alone is banner for sure in my opinion. Those Continental USA buttons just don't come out of the ground very often and are very collectible. They are also worth a good chunk of money in decent shape. You've got one hell of a site waiting for you bud! Voting banner

Thanks. I thought they were rare but lack of relies on the button made me question it. I found a few keepers in my pack that I forgot about yesterday. Another ox knob, a octagonal pewter, octagonal cuff button and a small dome button.

Yeah I think most don't truly appreciate how special these are because they don't know enough about them. My buddy posted his here on a Maine site and I laughed because he got very few replies. Post a mercury dime and you'll get 80 replies :-)
I only dig very old sites and have a great appreciation for these things. I may go out and get skunked but I don't care to hunt new parks and schools. Put me in the middle of the woods with the ticks and old stone walls and I'm happy. Anything Rev War in my opinion is one of the ultimate finds. What's more important than the event that gained us our freedom and allowed the United Stated to be.
You my friend have an important piece of history in your collection and I think it's incredible. The few things you forgot to post would be a great day for most. I hope you find another amazing item whenever you get back. I will be waiting ........

Now that my friend is an awesome hunt. Many on Tnet would consider any of the coins among their best finds ever. The dime and button both are true treasures.

Wow just gets better and better. A shame if this doesn't make Banner GL. But you know how special these finds are and that's what's important

GREAT Finds Tom. I'll try to get a variety ID on the Cont. Army Button. Don Troiani will know. Congrats.......Todd

Your variant.....on lettering and size, matches, (in Troiani's book), AUSA.sq. "Variant without border. Found near Fort Anne NY. 19 mm." There is a problem. Yours has a border! I think Troiani would be VERY interested in this one. Could be a new variant. His e-mail is Chainshot@aol.com. I would DEFINITELY send pics of front and back to him. He'll answer, and confirm, variety. Todd

All that rain out there is producing you a bumper crop of banner finds!
Awesome button and dime, congrats! Banner!

Doninbrewster thanks for the ID. I was going through some varieties last night and thought this one and the 19g4 were close but the 24-5 is much better. Here are better photos. I hope

Todd, I just sent Mr. Troiani an email and when I hear from him I will post what he thinks Bout it.

The 19-g.4 is very close as it's part of the same group with crosses in the legends. The main difference on the obverse is there is a dash before and after the cross like this -+- that is not on the 19-g.4. The only other obverse that has this punctuation is obverse 17, but that doesn't have the cross before AUCTORI. At first I thought you piece was a 17-g.3 but the colon was too far from the bust. Your updated pictures are much better and you piece is quite nice for a 24-g.5. I should add that the piece in my collection is originally from the Dr. Thomas Hall collection who wrote the original reference on Connecticuts. It's also one of the finest known for the variety. Taking all that in you found a great coin.

Wow, that 1821 dime about as defect-free as a dug coin can get. It looks like you recovered it carefully without wiping or cleaning it, and the original patina is intact. Grade is about VF35 or maybe EF40. What a nice find! Now go look up the JR variety and see if it's a rare one.

There are a few minor dings on the coin. None from me. I have fairly good patience when it comes to that. Hate to find something rare only to degrade it because I couldn't wait till I got home. I usually wrap it tightly in toilet paper and put it in a spare glove or I carry little tackle box that I packed with cotton. Seems to hold things nicely while I continue.

You know you have a heck of a post when a nice Navy button seems to have slipped through the cracks.
