A mental bait is when the dowser has a clear picture in their mind's eye as to what they are looking for and being able to concentrate on this without being distracted. So if you are looking for a silver coin cache, then you would picture in your mind a container of silver coins and hold that image for as long as you can while you complete the dowsing excercise.
