OK. I see so many postings about how people would do this or that if THEY were in a bad spot in the desert. Everybody knows just how they would tackle a Treasure Hunting Expedition out there! I have been TH'ing, Hiking, and Photographing this area for the last few years now. VAST and DESOLATE don't even begin to describe this area.
In todays' modern world, I am at most 15-20 miles from my Suburban. I know that if I were snake or scorpion bitten, or got caught up in an old Spanish death trap or rockfall, there is a good chance I would die before getting back to the 'Burbn. Cell phones get no reception. Too far out for walkie-talkies. Your only hope would be to start a very smoky fire and pray that a Border Patrol Helicopter or Airplane sees the smoke, and calls in a ground unit!
Sometimes when I'm standing on top of one of the 6000+ foot peaks looking out over the area, I try to think how I would feel 300 years ago if I were in the same place, and the nearest friendly face was two weeks walk away. That's two weeks walk in an area where you NEED a half gallon of water per day to survive, and it's only you and maybe a horse. I can't fathom it! The closest I can come is when I was in the military in Honduras and El Salvador in the mid eighties. Only me and about 11 other buddies in the middle of another 3rd world country on whose flag is a picture of an American being lynched
Even then, I was just a radio call away from being helo'd out.
Well, enough preaching. Here is the Eastern California Desert in all it's glory:
