Has anyone used one? I got one at Target a few weeks ago. The only thing I cooked was apple pie (2 slices buttered bread and a spoonful of pie filling). I've been camping for 40 years and never saw one before.
We've always called them mountain or moon pies. ?? Been eating them all
my life. Any type of cooked meat or lunch meat, cheeses or fruit fillings or
veggies can be used. And people think the panini or pressed sandwich is
something new. Only the folks who never leave the city think that. Sprinkle
some powdered sugar or sugar & cinnamon on those fruit pies when you pull
them out. Pretty tasty.
I love them. We always take them when we go car camping. My favorite is tomato paste, cheese, pepperoni, and a touch of garlic for pizza pockets, and for breakfast a little bacon, cheese and scrambled egg. I do more backpacking than car camping, I wish they would come up with a lightweight version for packing. It's just too hard to justify carrying the extra weight.
Our pie iron broke last year on vacation, so for Easter this year we got the kids there own pie iron. I made sure to get the irons that came apart so we can make individual scrambled eggs in them. We also make pizza pies, pie filling pies. I want to try to make more things in them this year.
