I'm trying to determine approx. location of a couple old homesites ( old fields) would dowsing be a good option to narrow down my search ? Any help appreciated..

The easy way will be use a GPS locator or GPS from the cellphone

You go to a site and take the GPS coords then put that coords on a satelital Software like Google-Earth or Google-Maps to search buildings and constructions

In Satelital Software you can identify old foundations because they dont have ceiling

LIDAR seems to be a good option for old foundation If not in plowed fields). Yes, did a remote map dowsing once for archaeologist on the museum board, at a French historical site southern Ohio. Have plenty of find photo if you want to see a few of them.
