pinpointer.. Do I really need one?

was wondering how much you ole salty pro's use these? I have never used one but have been considering getting one. First how useful are they? do they really save that much time or does it take more time to fiddle with it? what would be a good brand to buy? and how much would one expect to pay?

I don't think anyone is trying to say that pinpointers are perfect or that you have to have one. A pinpointer is a tool. Nothing else. It is a very specialized type of tool. If you find that you have no need for one then that is your perogative. A probe is also jsut another tool.

It's like sawing wood. Most people can get by with a hack saw for all of their life. They see no need for anything else. Others can't believe they waited so long to get their first chop saw, coping saw, band saw, or any other type of sawing tool.

It all depends on what type of hunting you do, where you do it, how deep the objects are, how much trash there is, and what your patience level is when retrieving items. Sometimes a probe just won't do it and it is too difficult to pinpoint the exact location with your normal metal detector. In those cases a pinpointer may be just the ticket. And then again, maybe not.

I for one never leave home without my pinpointer. It's a great tool that I've found to improve my ability to retrieve targets quickly and without damaging the grass. And like someone else said, there are many times where the object is sitting right in front of my face and I just can't see it.

Put in my 2 cents.
I have been doing this about 40 years and used a probe in soft soil. Got my first pinpointer about 5 years ago. I don't leave home without it. I am blind in one eye and have no depth perception. Sun glare and shadows really cause problems. Gotta have a pinpointer and it's gotta viberate.
