I went over to my aunt's today, hoping to find a privy to a house that dated to the 1830's. The foundation is still on her property, and I had some aerial photos from the late 1930's to guide me, but I didn't find it today. When I arrived, I was looking at the picture when I noticed one of her relatives from a different side of the family at his father's house across the road. A couple years ago, I found a flattened Barber or older quarter under an old oak there, and I'd always wanted to do some more hunting. I showed the fellow my picture and asked a few questions; there are very few people left who remember where things were back in the day, but he was going to make some inquiries. I also asked if he minded if I bummed around with my detector at his place; his father had died last year and he was fixing it up to eventually move back. Not a problem! It was cool, but nice, and I figured I could pursue this privy for a long time without success, so I strapped on the detector and went across the street. First signal, wheat. Broken toy gun. Nice quarter signal - Washington quarter. Several weeks ago, I sold some common silver at 22:1; silver is up a little, so this one will net me over $5.50. Lots of wheats and two Mercs later, it suddenly dawned on me that this was the type of day I'd often have at the silver farm, a place that fell into my lap about four years ago and yielded over 100 silvers and 500 wheats. The nicest wheat was a 1909 VDB that looks, detail-wise, like it was dropped new. There were 13 others, mostly in the 40's. I'll send them to school tomorrow with the kids; they're having our community's annual coin drive to buy July 4th fireworks. We also added $1.03 in clad and memorials today to help the cause. They'll be taking in a pretty good contribution! Other items of interest are the medallion from Paris and a silver plated spoon, broken in two. You can imagine my pulse when I first spotted the handle, but I knew I didn't get enough of a signal to be all silver
. Treasure hunting time is dwindling with baseball and other commitments, so it was nice to get out, get a good site and find a few $. I sold silver a few years ago for this same aunt at 9:1, and that was a good price then. I wish she had more to sell! At least I do
And no, that isn't my damage on the Merc!
