Plated Buckle

Took a road trip South today to find some ground that was thawed a little more than around home. I was purposely trying to find deep iffy signals when i got a little blip that i kept swinging over on my machine that pinpointed very small. It said it was 9" deep by the time i got see, it was at least a foot deep. I got a silver plated buckle that is stamped Sterling F on the back. I tried taking a pic of the back but it didn't come out to good. I also got some clad to go along with this find... Thanks for looking

Why would it say Sterling and then be plated?

I agree , I think its all Sterling, unless the 'f' means plated in 'some kinda way'.

If you look at the top piece thats bent over closely you can barely see Sterling and look at the opposite end of the buckle you can see the silver flaking off... Thanks for looking

Odd that it's plated, yet stamped sterling. Oh well. Still a nice looking buckle.

It looks like he Hickok buckle in the listing below, which although listed as Sterling, when enlarged says 1/5 Sterling. Does yours have the same mark perhaps? ...not that I know exactly what it means (beyond being 1 fifth Sterling). Cool buckle! I dug a sterling Hickok buckle ages ago and the first thing I thought when I saw yours was that's what it was. Very odd it's marked sterling, but appears plated. I dug a brass ring with some gilt still visible and it was marked 14K inside. Obviously a fake. Perhaps they did that with buckles too?! Either way, nice buckle
