hello, i found this ring detecting today but i cant id it. all i do know is that it is a ring. i think it is a toy as it is adjustable. i think it is brass or copper cause it is tarnished. it looks like a mailbox on the top, and has some fancy design on the side of the box. then it has a torch with flames on the left side and the right has weights and scale. then it has a thin piece of metal coming through a small hole, it looks like you would pull it back and then release it for some reason lol. then it has a half ring on the bottom. if anybody can figure it out it's here. thanks everone. "god bless"
ben.

Wish I could help. I have no idea what you have there.
Keep us informed.

Wow, that's an odd find. It doesn't look like a finger ring. I don't have a clue what it is. I'll be watching this one to see if it can be identified. Thanks for posting.

this one really has me stumped lol. i have never seen anything like it before, and i have dug some pretty strang stuff. i know it must go around the finger as it is adjustable, like one of those ring's a kid would get from the gumball machine at the store. maybe it is what "sniffer" said, a scale for weighing gold dust. maybe you would put it on your finger and scoop out gold dust or something, but i am in the northeast "bangor maine" if it is that i wonder how in the world it got here. i am detecting a place called the childrens home in bangor maine it was built in 1835 it was for orphaned children. i am going to go detect it agine today. thanks for everyones help. I am trying to remember a modern version of this thing. The wire down from it and the bottom ring. I just can not remember..

Is it possible that it is a ring for workers who have to cut a lot of twine? When I used to work as a printer, sometimes we'd bundle a stack of items and tie them off with twine and we wore rings that had a cutting edge to cut the twine. Just my WAG.

I had to joint this site after reading for a few months I would like to take a stab at your ring, it may not be a ring. it has been a long time but I have seen 1800's style survey equipment and this looks like it could be a piece off of it. they where made of brass. i would have to look at one somewhere to see if the piece fits. it possible the bottom that hung a plum bob.

Bangor, any chance of getting some close ups of it with better resolution, particularly of how that bottom loop and spring attach? (for instance, does the bottom "loop" turn on a rivet and might be out of whack now? Is the main ring part adjustable?) The thing looks like it has a design on it, which would seem to eliminate the possibility of it being a surveying part of something. It will be a fun one to figure out.

hello, "johnnyi". i will try to get a better close up photo of it for you, the design is a "torch" and "flame", and on the other side is a "weight scale". the main ring is adjustable like the ones from a childs ring, but this is heavy brass. the bottom ring dont move it is in a fixed position. thats a good thought "bassasasin" a snuff ring i have a couple of poision rings and that crossed my mind too. this is a photo of where i have been detecting i have only detected outback of the place so far. i went to another place today by a stream and got a very nice 1859 indian, and a double ring bullet. well i better go eat my dinner or the wife will scalp me lol. thanks everyone for your help. "god bless" benny.

wasn't it originally call the Bangor Orphan Asylum? Incorporated in 1839 with that house being built in 1869 and renamed the Childrens home. Isn't it in the National Register of Historic Places?

the original name was the "bangor orphan asylum" and yes it is on the "National Register of Historic Places" that is why i only detect out back in the woods where it is off of the property, but yet close enough that you have a good chance of finding stuff. i had to ask where the property lines were as i dont want to cross any lines lol. but i always make sure to get permission to detect or find out where to detect as {no one can detect anything thats on a Historic Place or land} but it would be a detectorest dream lol. tomorrow i am going to a place where the fire of 1911 took place here in bangor hopfully i will find something good. have fun and good luck. Well, it looks like one end of the top mailbox-looking thing is open to "scoop" up something. Beyond that, I'm a stupido. Good luck! -Noodle

Im thinking with the torch and weight scale that it is no childs ring. I can understand a scoop connection to a scale but I cant figure the torch and flame.... ... a better pic of that may help. I think its some kind of tool that goes on the finger.
