Good Day All - I am a new Excalibur 1000 owner in need of desperate help. I have only had my machine for about 4 days and just finished my third beach outing with it. I've been finding clad like a mad man and assumed that meant that everything was well. I decided to take 2 gold rings with me today to see what kind of tone would be produced and I am a bit troubled. I buried both rings separately at six and eight inches in the dry sand and picked up NO tone.
I was having no problem picking up pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and pull tabs, but no go on the rings.
What am I doing wrong and what should I try next?
Thanks very much for your help.

Yes, I had the descrimination completely off, the sensitivity on auto and the threshold was barely audible.
Thanks,
John

John,Try this put your sens at the 10 or11 oclock position, not in auto. Make sure disc is at 0,then try a piece of foil ,if it picks the foil up an nulls(goes quite)on the rings they're not likely gold.Hope this helps. danielsga

Excal is great machine. As others have said, set disc. at 0, threshold barely audible, and sens. in auto or 10 and check for a tone. If it goes quiet the rings may not be gold as was stated before. Check them again at another location, then on top of the sand, etc. Make sure the pinpoint is in disc. Also check other rings and pultabs. Not all coils or MD's are created equal even in the same brands. It's also possible it was dropped in shipment. Another reason to buy from a dealer with a store as you get to test them before you buy, but not always possible.

Good Luck,

Sandman

Thanks for all of the help guys - I have been out with the Excal a few more times now and am getting a bit more used to it. I took the rings back to the beach and tried them out on top of the sand and picked them up just fine, so hopefully with a bit more experience I will start finding the gold. I have been finding a ton of clad and am now starting to pick up a great deal of pull-tabs.
Found my first silver yesterday, a merc that is so black that I can't tell the date. I live right next to the beach, so I will be hunting nearly every day and will keep you posted.
Thanks for being,
John

John, with you living next to the beach like you are, do you want to adopt me. I will soon be up to my butt in ice and snow here in Michigan and don't have the cash for the gas for the motorhome hog. I will cut the grass and take out the trash and sleep under the porch. It's time to head for the sun till next spring.

Be careful what you wish for Sandman, adopting a domestic servant does have a certain amount of appeal. While the beaches here are definitely the most beautiful that I've seen in the U.S., the cost of living is the ugliest (and so is my house). My house is honestly one of the scariest things you could imagine, but it's close to the beach and its the only way that I can afford to live here.
Next consider the s.s. style condo crusaders. They will constantly try to let you know how much money they paid to have their private slice of white sand and that a man with a detector in his hand is "nothing more than a common scumbag," (this was actually said to me yesterday morning).
I'm very seriously considering a move back to Atlantic Beach, N.C.. The beaches aren't as beautiful and the water not as clear, but the people are real and the living much better.

Boy, you just pushed my button. These jerks that have ruined our beautiful state just don't get it. Unfortunately, the attitude you observed seems to be more prevalent in the panhandle, even tho no area is immune. I believe the condo commandos lost a high court battle about beach rights a couple years ago. Screw 'em. Tell them to take I-10 to I-95 and turn left.

MsentMe, The Excal can be tricky in certain areas. Depending on the amount of electrical energy around the area you may need to move the sense all the way up to the 11 -1 oclock position . Keeping the disc below 3 will ensure you find the gold regardless. I wont go into the Condo Craphanders except to say that a loyt of the private residences on some of our beaches feel the same way. Jus t trying to get on the beach in Hilsboro or lighthouse point is almost impossible unless you have a boat and then its still tough. Like Bill said: give em the directions north and watch out for the door hittin em on the A$$. HH

Msentme,
I understand what your talking about. Even on fresh water lakes detectorist get treated like dirt or worse. You can be detecting a beach swim area near a line of buoys and a lake resident passing in a boat will throw beer cans at you, worse they're empty......At least they have a refund value. What is worse is having stones tossed your way and it's usually kids. I spotted the ones that did it one morning and followed them ashore to talk to the parents that didn't see the "crime." That's one reason I like to hunt very early or at night.

The thing that pulls my chain is stepping in another detectist hole. In a swim area it is very important to fill your hole, especially on a fresh water area as there is very little wave action. We have park personel around here that if they catch you leaving a plug out of the ground, you get a ticket and need to pay to have the area repaired by $$$ professionals.

Even at the beach I fill my digs. I had a "Lady" cuss me out at Myrtle beach once for leaving those HUGE holes everywhere. I politely told her that the holes in question were made by children not detectorists. Then I told her "have a nice day you old bat!" Some people are so stupid I am always amaized. In the surf I am not so concious of covering because one can hardly recover a target without the hole filling in. Good luck and HH! Chris
