I believe that is the Kentucky state button,civil war era.Chances are strong itis the real deal,a rare one!!!!!!

Stars are present on sides of the legend, 23 mm. Waterbury Button Company made these during the 1860s.
"WATERBURY BUTTON CO. / *EXTRA*" dm (depressed mark) between two rings of dots

My best guess without *EXTRA* dm is post civil war, circa 1890-1910
