definitely, they're not all big fish by any means, and most people are just your average hobby level coin collector, but I think there is more than you would suspect.

i would say hundreds in each state, thousands in some, but average volume would be very low compared to CRH'ers on this site. Where someone on this site may go thru 15-30 boxes a month, I would say an accurate average (or state average) would be closer to 10 rolls per month.

It is not a secret but it is not for everyone. Tanner and I have broken rule number one twice in the past 3 years. We have told and have showed two people about CRH, My uncle (Tanners great uncle) and a coworker. My uncle is retired and collects coins. He is big on estate sales. We have showed him our finds, gone over his house to sort through a couple boxes. He has been excited about our finds and says he would like to give it a try. He is retired and has enough of a bank roll to work a lot of boxes. It is not his thing so he just goes to estate sales. My coworker bought about $350 worth of customer rolls did not find a thing and has not tried since. My wife is still not really convinces of the value of CRH.

My work allows free time to stop at banks. I often drive 200 miles to a job and if I get to a town early I have time to stop by a few banks. I have a bunch of local banks that I can stop at as I run errands, pick my kids up from school, take them to soccer etc. I have only opened one bank account because of CRH and it was actually a transfer to a closer bank that has a coin counter.

There are coin roll hunters out there but I do not think there are as many as people on this board seem to think. In three years I have only run into one other CRH and I am often in 10 to 15 banks a week. My regular bank that we have a standing order of two boxes a week, often has to bring in tellers from other branches. I will ask them for any loose halves in their drawer and I will follow up with "Do many people ask for halves at your branch?" Most of the time I get a reply like. "No not really."

I also think lots of tellers are clueless at to the value of halves. This past week a teller did not have any halves so I asked if any of the other tellers had any. The teller next two her, handed her 3 halves one was a 1964 Ken. So someone deposited the coin it then passed trough the hands of two elderly tellers hands and then into mine.

There may be a lot of CRH's out there but there are also a lot of banks. I saw a billboard the other day that bragged that there 130 Flag Star Banks in Michigan. I doubt that I have been in more that 10 of them. That means every day for the past 3 years, 120 of those banks could have had silver deposited in them and we never had a chance of finding any of it.

I'd say it depends on the state. If you wanted to break it down even further, it even depends on the city. That's what I would think anyway. IMO California probably has the most just because of how many people live here (which makes finding keepers even harder). This is an intresting idea though, I think we should do a poll on what state everyone is from on the forum. Maybe it would give us a good sample of how many there are.

I know there have to be quite a few in my area (within 5-10 miles). I have almost given up on CWR's because all I seem to find are someone elses dumps. Picked up $100 in dimes yesterday and all the rolls had a black "x" on the outside.

While working last week in a town about 20 minutes from where I live I saw a guy putting 10 boxes of halves into his car. I didn't get a chance to say anything to him though.

I'm still keeping at it though, just upped my weekly box order to a modest 3 per week. I hope to increase that a little more now that I have seem to have found a few more dump banks.

Not much a secret, as lack of ability, availability, and general ignorance. It takes a special someone to stick with a hobby like this and make it worth the time, effort, and expense. Many 1st timers will have big dreams, go to a bank and get some rolls only to get skunked and give up right then. Only rolling high volume and being able to do it for a long time equals success that will make you thousands of dollars per year.

Many people's jobs interfere. Small towns with few banks take a lot out. Lack of funds kills others ability.

Lack of efficiency stops a lot of potential CRH'ers early in their career. The person realizes they are spending too much on gas alone and that purchasing the silver from a coin shop is more profitable money and certainly time wise.

in a nutshell, it takes a certain type of person, with a certain type of assets available (time, money, knowledge) to make it all happen with a high level of profit.

As for the small time guys, getting a box every now and then I don't really consider a real CRHer. These people really don't impact the availability of the finds much... The whales though, like me really lol, can have a major impact on an areas available keepers for some time.

It depends upon your definition of a "CRHer".

If you're only referring to those of us that order boxes regularly and/or travel hundreds of miles frequently in the pursuit of silver, then I would argue that the number is relatively low. However, if you include those that ask for halves when they're at their personal bank cashing their weekly paychecks, (and maybe a few other banks in close proximity) then that number goes up. WAY up.

I frequently travel hundreds of miles at a time for CRH purposes only. Almost every bank now says that they have a patron that regularly comes around looking for halves. I don't think its the same person barely beating me (usually by 15 minutes to 1 day) to every bank within 150+ miles of my house.

There aren't tens of thousands of "big-timers" out there. There are however likely that many "small-timers." If nearly every bank has 1 small-timer, that doesn't leave much for the big-timers to find.

Less than there are metal detectorists. I would say near big cities you will have larger amounts maybe in the hundreds. Rural areas maybe a hand full. State wide is hard to say. I know just based on this forum that we have a ton in Va. and bit less in NC.

As was pointed out, I think it depends on the size of the state and what your definition of CRH is. If you are talking just serious CRH (regularly orders boxes or does CRH "road trips") the number is probably around 50 for smaller states, perhaps 100-200 for large states like Texas and California. If you include casual CRH (the person asking for halves while doing there other banking or requests a few rolls once in a while) you probably grow the number exponentially.

I don't think CRH is the big secret many here think it is. I think most people know there are silver coins that occasionally turn up in circulation and that if they got a bunch of coins from a bank they could probably find some, but don't know specific details and don't really care to find out. It is kind of similar to how there are tons of people that understand the concept of extreme couponing and know enough to apply the basics, but most of them aren't going to bother. For both a lot of people are going to say that it isn't worth there time before they even start.

I've been CRHing since 1970. You know you've 'got it bad' when you're actually making progress putting together entire rolls of 1909 VDB pennies and rolls of proof halves - with every year since 1968 represented. That type of dedication (insanity actually ) requires hours of planning and work at home to sort 'the wheat from the chaffe.' Not for the common man. Persistance is the key to success and most persons just are not wired to do the work required make this activity profitable - especially the toting of over a million coins to the 'dump' banks.

But that said, in my area of Virginia...you're silly stupid if YOU DON'T CRH. A good guess is that there are at least a few dozen persons 'in my league' in my county alone.

I think that the state of Alaska has at least 30 CRH'ers, as to the state of Montana, probrably 60+, a state like california: thousands. It all depends on location Location LOCATION.
