I think the word WAX is misleading here. The medium is red ink. A signature still wont do here for important business such as opening a bank account or buying a house or car. You gotta have a hanko!The hanko (stamp that is used for ones signature in Japan) was originally made of ivory but today are usually made of some poly material. Today we use a simple red ink pad (not as cool as your antique version)

The characters that are on that box are not chinese according to my wife who is from Taiwan. Likely Japanese.
