UPDATE: Possible $1 gold coin love token

Its been awhile since I have posted, hope all is well!, I need a little help I found this yesterday..I believe it is a $1 dollar gold coin love token, it is the exact size of a $1 gold coin, it looks like it was surrounded by what I now believe was a zinc or some metal similar bezel, does anyone here know how i can safely remove the corrosion from the bezel without damaging the coin or gold object? ty vm...jd

UPDATE: I took it to a local vintage jeweler its def gold he believes it was a $1 gold coin also, we got 80% of the corrosion off i decided to leave some on, he said the reverse of the coin was destroyed from the process used to heat bond it to a copper/zinc alloy and it was most likely a cuff link or button.

Whatever it is, it is very cool! The engraving looks "machine made"... the circle is too perfect to have been done by hand (IMO).

You "might" be able to use electrolysis to remove the corrosion on the bezel, this should make the bezel clean and visible, so that hopefully it can be easily removed. The corrosion has built up on the bezel and "locked" the two pieces together. Electrolysis should have no effect on the gold portion.

Good luck!

If that is in fact a gold coin you probably can't do it any harm when using whatever method you decide for cleaning the bezel as gold is the most non-reactive metal there is. It would be interesting to remove the bezel completely and see what the back of the love token looks like. That will probably answer your concerns as to its identity.

Reminds me of one of those regiment of riflemen buttons.

thanks guys i may try the electrolysis, i dont think that hurts gold

Gonna keep an eye out for an update... curious as to what you have found... good job by you!

A really cool find. Congrats on something so unique.

it's got Richey Rich's initials on it

Put it in an acid bath.

Might take it to a jeweler? The have the corrects tools and wash solutions that might do the perfect thing for ya.

Nice digs. Good luck to you at whatever you do, keep us updated.

thanks guys updated post, at least it a keeper lol

It's a keeper for sure! tough call... leave the junk on the back to show what it was last used for, or take it off with acid (wont hurt the coin) and maybe have an ugly back.

That would have been a wealthy man who enjoyed flaunting his status. A set of $1 gold cuff links would be close to a weeks wages around the turn of the century. If this was at a home, you should hunt it HARD!

I'd try CLR on it. Test to see if it will hurt the gold, but I doubt it. Maybe run it through some thermal contraction/expansion/contraction cycles. Perhaps that crusty crap will flake right off with some dry ice on it.

Great find ! Since it's likely .900 gold - i think you'll be successful with one or other of the aforementioned methods of removing
the crud ! I'm eager to see the results !!

Looking at the clean up, must have been a cufflink.

Very interesting piece! Congratulations.
