Possible artifact

I’m trying to get better at identifying artifacts other than arrowheads. I found this where I’ve found a lot of fire cracked rock and arrowheads. Maybe someone can give me some input or is it just a plain old rock.

If I found that in association with other artifacts I would assume it was a mortar but from the pics it would be hard to say for sure.

well if it is, it was used in an expedient way, most likely pretty much a natural shape, that was perhaps used.

Could have been made from a stone subject to breakdown from water? The ones I’ve seen were not necessarily made from extremely hard rock, rather a course granular type stone. Any context that would help?

Natural I would say, if it had been used as a metate it would be a lot smoother, no signs of any abrasion.

That’s what I thought, EXCEPT if the top was exposed to the elements and the surface decayed/dissolved/eroded at different rates in different spots on the rock due to the composition of the stone over 10,000 years? It looks like it may have been formed by exposure to water if its natural..

Think about it like an old weathered board. I’d expect it to have flat surfaces. However after 100 years, it’s bumpy with raised grain. 7,000 years of nature? Hard stone typically resists breakdown. It’s a possibility? But without some supporting context it’s just a picture of a rock.
