I posted this a while back and was not able to get a positive identification. It has been soaking and I have taken some better quality photographs to aid in the identification. It now looks to me there is a eagle on the top, a cannon facing to the left and a stack of cannon balls also on the left, and It looks like a the letter G on the lower section, and possibly a E. Any ideas

If you turn it 90 degrees CCW , it looks to me like a British George III halfpenny??

Can't be certain as the amount of detail on that button is pretty low (except for the wheel, it's pretty distinct on my monitor), but here is a button which might be the same one...

What, if anything, is visible on the back?

EDIT: BTW, if this is the correct button it's an 1808-1811 US Federal Artillery Regiment button.

You positively have an early artillery button. Looking in Alberts I do see several variants dating 1802-1808 where the cannon balls are stacked to the left of the wheel like yours is. REG is what you are seeing at the bottom. Gently work on it some more to see if there is anything in front of the R.

Very nice find!
