Potential Daguerreotypes.

Hi everyone,

I was going through family history stuff because my grandma passed away. My aunt hired me to get pictures and scans of everything. While I was going through the pictures, I found these.

On closer inspection I discovered they’re printed on metal, which makes me suspect they are daguerreotypes.

I am astonished. I didn’t know my grandparents had these.

Now I just gotta figure out who’s in the pictures!

OK, I made a mistake. I sincerely apologize. The second picture of the toddler is not even on metal. I thought it was, but I realized it wasn’t. My mistake, I’m so sorry.

The first picture, however, is on metal. However, according to research, it is not a daguerreotype. It is magnetic, therefore it is not on copper. It is a tin type.

Hello junicholes no appolgies needed, as everyone makes mistakes as its impressive that you acknowledged it. so Its learning curve for all of us. I love these old pictures, as they are a window into the past. And for being a bit of a history junkie.

Tintype pictures were used most widely from the 1850s to the 1870s, with a lesser presence continuing into the 1930s and a modern revival as a fine art format today. Looking at the girl's dress, it seems to be a christening gown? Hard to date.

But the other picture of the two kids dress look about around the time of 1860s to the 1890s. Definitely not post-1900. So maybe the date can help narrow down past family members?
