Power is Spain is a real pain

WOW...
Oh Shit!.gif

From CNN: "The outage took out screens, lighting and power sockets, and caused traffic lights and subway systems to suddenly fail. Some power began to trickle back across Spain hours later, but efforts to fully revive the grid and to investigate the cause have not yet been successful."

Considering it's such a large geographic area, I have to wonder if they got smacked by a low-level EMP.

The Portuguese energy company REN (Rede Eletrica Nacional) has said that the problem was "due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 KV), a phenomenon known as 'induced atmospheric vibration.’ These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network."

Spain has not yet commented on that belief.

Outages were reported across the Iberian peninsula and parts of France, affecting Andorra, Portugal, Spain and southern France as various networks disconnected themselves from the grid to try and stabilise the situation.

This year has been about the windiest ever so far. Seems about once a week a huge storm crosses North America. I read some place had the windiest March on record. Never hear about those vibrations causing induction problems. But who knows.

Officials are considering several possibilities, including a cyber attack. According to Reuters, authorities have not ruled out malicious interference, and investigations are ongoing.

Interestingly, Portugal’s national electric company REN suggested that a fire on Alaric Mountain in southwest France, which damaged a major high-voltage power line, could also be behind the chaos. Portuguese distributor E-Redes added that the blackout stemmed from "a problem with the European electricity system," forcing them to cut power in specific areas to stabilize the network.

Juanma Moreno, president of the Andalusian regional government, told reporters that a cyber attack is currently considered the most likely cause.'

Spain’s energy operator Red Electrica also agrees with Portugal's Rede Electrica Nacional assessment and believes the cuts were caused by a “very strong oscillation in the electrical network” [as a result of extreme temperature variations] that led Spain’s power system to “disconnect from the European system, and the collapse of the Iberian electricity network at 12:38.”

Its statement followed concerns a cyber attack may have been behind the blackouts, but the European Union said there are no such indications at this point.

Conspiracy theorists of course are having a field day, as usual.

Or aliens. Don't forget aliens about to mount a planetary invasion.
If that's the case I'm not worried. If they can come here AND launch a planetary invasion there's nothing we can do about it anyway... just lay down your arms and surrender if you can.

The aliens only want to serve man.

If they're coming here to invade and remove humanity, I'm sure as hell not going to surrender. (que up Churchill's WWII speech)

These folks claim not cyber not 'atmospheric anything' :

Elsewhere I read the power company thinks they know but are not releasing yet until they check a bit more.

Shows how fragile modern society is now. We're due for a monster solar flare hit they reckon.
