Re: PRAYERS NEEDED FOR MEL AND GAYLE "UPDATE"
Just got home and am heading to bed. I have to be up in a few hours...want to catch a quick nap before I head back to the hospital...before the snow/ice/freezing rain...whatever...storm hits us tomorrow.
Sorry I haven't updated you in the last couple of days. Haven't been getting home from the hospital until very late, and then going back to the hospital very early. Basic recap: Tuesday's surgery went ok.....but 20 minutes later everything went "South". She spiked a 103.7 fever in only a matter of minutes and had severe cold chills. Then both of her kidneys shut down again. They would only let me in to see her for 2 minutes in the PACU (Post Anethesia Care Unit). They subsequently transferred her to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Tuesday night. Wednesday morning they held just only a little bit more hope that she would pull through. We brought Gayle's mom into the ICU to see Gayle. The doctors explained that when they had gone up into the ureter and found that it was healing nicely, they took out the big stint and put in a smaller stint.............however, they decided not go after the kidney stones...giving the ureter more time to heal. Unfortuately, bacteria from the big stint spilled out into her bloodstream.....and when the smaller stint was inserted, the bacteria spill went throughout her kidneys and body, causing sepsis and renal failure.
They were able to isolate the bacteria culture, which identified what strain it was...thus giving them a plan of attack for antibiotics to use. Last night they transferred her to a regular medical room; however, her medical condition is still very serious and guarded. When I left the hospital a few minutes ago, they had taken her off of the IVs, changed the antibiotic to Vanctimiacen (sp?)......and had to put her back on oxygen. However, they are hoping that if all progresses well enuf, they might discharge her on Mon or Tues. You know how it is with hospitals....if you are well enuf to pay your bill, you are out of there.
Anyway, the doctors have been absolutely superb with her. This latest setback wasn't something that they had done wrong. However, they know now that this is the fourth time since Sep that her kidneys have shut down....so when they go after the kidney stones this next time, they plan to pump her full of antibiotics several weeks in advance.
Of course, all of this is provided that she pulls through this bout.
Keep her in your prayers. Will try to update you when I can. TNETTERs are the greatest. Thanks.
