Re: PRAYERS NEEDED FOR MEL AND GAYLE "UPDATE"

Just got home and am heading to bed. I have to be up in a few hours...want to catch a quick nap before I head back to the hospital...before the snow/ice/freezing rain...whatever...storm hits us tomorrow.

Sorry I haven't updated you in the last couple of days. Haven't been getting home from the hospital until very late, and then going back to the hospital very early. Basic recap: Tuesday's surgery went ok.....but 20 minutes later everything went "South". She spiked a 103.7 fever in only a matter of minutes and had severe cold chills. Then both of her kidneys shut down again. They would only let me in to see her for 2 minutes in the PACU (Post Anethesia Care Unit). They subsequently transferred her to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Tuesday night. Wednesday morning they held just only a little bit more hope that she would pull through. We brought Gayle's mom into the ICU to see Gayle. The doctors explained that when they had gone up into the ureter and found that it was healing nicely, they took out the big stint and put in a smaller stint.............however, they decided not go after the kidney stones...giving the ureter more time to heal. Unfortuately, bacteria from the big stint spilled out into her bloodstream.....and when the smaller stint was inserted, the bacteria spill went throughout her kidneys and body, causing sepsis and renal failure.

They were able to isolate the bacteria culture, which identified what strain it was...thus giving them a plan of attack for antibiotics to use. Last night they transferred her to a regular medical room; however, her medical condition is still very serious and guarded. When I left the hospital a few minutes ago, they had taken her off of the IVs, changed the antibiotic to Vanctimiacen (sp?)......and had to put her back on oxygen. However, they are hoping that if all progresses well enuf, they might discharge her on Mon or Tues. You know how it is with hospitals....if you are well enuf to pay your bill, you are out of there.

Anyway, the doctors have been absolutely superb with her. This latest setback wasn't something that they had done wrong. However, they know now that this is the fourth time since Sep that her kidneys have shut down....so when they go after the kidney stones this next time, they plan to pump her full of antibiotics several weeks in advance.

Of course, all of this is provided that she pulls through this bout.

Keep her in your prayers. Will try to update you when I can. TNETTERs are the greatest. Thanks.
Mel

Re: PRAYERS NEEDED FOR MEL AND GAYLE , UPDATE 2

Mel finally went home and slept till 1 or 1:30 this afternoon. They think one of the nurse's had some really strong perfume on and caused Gayle some respiratory difficulties. The doctors were going to release her tomorrow regardless but the infectious disease control team countermanded that order. They're giving her steroids for the breathing but they have to watch the amount or it'll knock out the goo that the antibiotics are giving. He thanks everyone for their prayers and thoughts and he'll be on when he can.

Thank you oh so very much for the update! You get some rest too! ;)

Thank you for the update. I will be praying for Mel and Gayle. My prayers are for quick healing and a rapid destruction of the bacteria in her body and also a special prayers for the medical teams that are taking care of her. Miraculous things can happen when you consult the Great physician.

Our prayers be with you both!

Just said a prayer for you two. It's hard to know exactly what to say in times like these. Just know that we ALL are thinking about you and wishing you two all the best. May God bless you Mel and Gayle. Hope you have a restful night.

Re: PRAYERS NEEDED FOR MEL AND GAYLE UPDATE 3

Just a quick note. Brought Gayle home from hospital on Wed. Got her settled in............and I slept for almost 14 hours.

Things are still very tricky with her. Doctors want to give her antibiotics for a couple of weeks and then go for another try at busting up the kidney stones. Don't know if her kidneys can take another shutdown.

I know, though, that all of the prayers said for Gayle were heard.

Burdie, just got through watching the DVD of the CTH............OMG...I sure did miss a great hunt. Pls tell the kids at the school that they did a FANTASTIC job on the DVD...seriously. And I really appreciate the shirt. I will wear it with pride.

Am going to do a quick glance at the forum and then go to bed. I had a well-deserved scotch on the rocks tonight, got Gayle in bed, and am going to hit the rack myself in a few shakes.

God bless you all...will write more when I can. BTW, if you haven't seen the movie "Wild Hogs"...rent it..............in that movie I could have sworn that it was all about the Rowdie Bunch!....LOL

Mel,

We will keep you and Gayle in our prayers :)

All,

What can I say? You all are the best!

Gayle was released from the hospital on Wednesday (?)...sorry I'm all mixed up on my days. She is doing ok, but very weak. She's doing well enuf to sass me back, though....LOL....but that is good. ;D ;D

I'm just very thankful right now for all of the prayers and emotional encouragement that have been sent our way. This has been a long haul for us...and we will have to go through this again in January. We hope this time they can successfully attack the kidney stones, which have now retreated back up into her left kidney. She wanted me to thank you all for the thoughts and prayers.

Our daughter's birthday is Christmas Day...she will be 27. My wife joked the other day that these kidney stones have caused her more pain than when she gave birth to our daughter 27 years ago. LOL ;D ;D ;D

Never a dull moment in my house. :)
