I don't get the appeal of state quarters either.

But that's just me.

Me too, it's just a marketing program of the U.S.Gov!

  • create a product
  • hype it up
  • give the impression of future value
  • push it on a naive public
  • make a killing

That the American way. The only one's to make a killing here will be the U.S.Gov and coin stores.

You're so right Dan! While it's true that the state quarters have produced more collectors, it has also created a subset of people who believe that anything coin related will be a valuable collectible.

Example: I work with a girl who started collecting state quarters when they came out. A couple of weeks ago she showed me an ad insert from the Sunday paper selling a Tennessee quarter with a computer painted portrait of Elvis over Washington. It was "free" but you had to pay $2.95 shipping. I'm not an Elvis fan and as a 30-year collector I know this is worthless as a collectible coin. My friend couldn't understand why I wasn't interested. I didn't spoil her excitement and she ordered anyway.

That's the problem. Novice collectors who don't know the difference between a novelty that will not appreciate in numismatic value and a coin that that's a genuine collectible.

I don't begrudge Elvis fans buying interesting souvenirs, but 20 years from now don't get upset when you try to sell it and a coin dealer tells you it's worth 25¢. A little knowledge goes a long way.

Here's a scan of the edge of the date and mintmark for you guys.

Imagine how easy this could be worn off. :P

Exactly. I'm not buying rolls of these ugly things, just a couple apiece. I want to be able to have them in my collection, but I'm not getting suckered into paying more for a dollar for them. I see the coin shows are already pushing them for twice of face value. Good grief. :-\

Just picked up five of them and was surpised to see how small they are. As for anyone hording them, I really don't see that happening.

Don

I wish all new coins were made as elegant as the silver walking liberty dollar. It's awesome, IMO.

True, but it's not very deep.

Make a dollar look like a Morgan or Walking Liberty half! I think the uglier coins might be cheaper to mint....
The goverment is making a profit by minting this junk.

"A study commissioned by the Mint showed that about half of all Americans are interested in collecting the presidential dollar coins. In a manner similar to the State Quarters, a fully circulating dollar coin would net perhaps as much as $500 million for the government annually, because for each presidential dollar coin distributed to the public, somewhere between $0.85 and $0.90 profit returns to the Treasury."

I wish they would make a silver coin. Make it worth $10 face value. At least it would be quality, not zinc clad crap.

$25 a roll but can anyone tell me what kind of rolls they are? Machine rolled? Clear plastic? rolled at Mint? at coin depository? at bank?

I couldnt find any at the banks, though my Credit Union had them.

I got 4 rolls from my bank where I get my half dollars. Same rolls as tw656 shows. I find it interesting that the mint is promoting the coins as collectable, yet they don't mark the rolls as P or D. And since the rolls are edge incised, there is no way to know what mint mark you have without completely unrolling the coins. I think the mint mark will matter to a collector. Those clear wrappers would work well for these coins.

I had asked my bank to order some rolls of the Washingtons for a couple weeks, so I got mine on the 15th. At the bank where I return my half rejects (the one that short changes me all the time), they had none, and said they were not going to order any. While they were short counting my halves by 3 bucks, a guy was at the drive up asking to get some of the new dollar coins. The teller played stupid, and said "Do you mean the Sacs? 2006? 2007?" and then put on a show asking the other tellers if they knew anything about some new coins. What a joke of customer service. Two other banks I stoped at that day also had no Washington Dollars (or half dollars). :-[

Another weird thing, the lettering on the rim is randomly incised with regard to heads and tails. I had expected this to be one way or the other, readable if the head was up, and upside down if the tails was up. Some are heads readable, some are tails readable.

Question, I opened one roll, and they were all "D" mint marked. Since all my rolls were from a freshly opened box, I assume all the coins are the same mint. Has anyone found any "P" mint yet?

Not yet... probably a little early for that I suppose.

I only bought one of the new presidential dollar coins and mine has a P mint mark.

I went by my credit union yesterday to see if they had any of the new dollars. I started to ask the teller "Have you gotten in those new.." and she interrupted me with "the new quarters?" I said "No, actually I'm looking for those new dollar coins." So she said, "Oh, the new Dollar quarters! - No we won't have those till the end of the week."
