I had the dis-stink privylage of finding the old town hall privy and spent the last week digging its cellar. Now as bad as it sounds ...it wasn't . Because of it being built with its backside on a sandy slope and limed on a regular basis...it wasn't bad to dig....no deep hole to crawl into .
I used Sanborn maps to help me find this and after talking to a couple of old timers who were very amused at me doing this...I found out that the privy was moved several times over the years along this sandy bank. From what I can gather there were two outhouses (ladies and mens ....cool for the late 1800's) and they were in place (well moving across the top of the slope ::)) until the late 40's. So I am pretty sure I was digging in the ladies privy cellar for the most part. I will keep digging until snow flies and am hoping to pull out more than my usually wheaties . I am having the neighbor guy make me a sifting screen, as I have been using a colander and its not going fast enough. I was surprised to find the sterling silver ring tho...was one of the first things in my sifter.....
The tortoise shell hair comb is really cool even damaged. It says solid gold on it and I can see along of where the gold was. I am going to see if the gems are real in it and then have the damaged parts removed and a brooch made out of it. Its about 4 inches across and 4 long.

I do like the lamp arm for a kerosene lamp and am going to see if I can find the cup/bowl part for it. Seems like I pulled up alot of kerosene lamp parts and there are many pottery bottles still there that I keep digging...but broken. Hoping for a whole one.

Keep on diggin Gypsy!! You can always find treasure in another persons crap. :D Ah I mean trash. ;D Congrats on the finds. HH
PS Hi Chye and Mo.

Too funny Stan

The site is pretty clean . They built these privies on a sand hill....the backs facing the lake. The backs were open toward the lake and the waste just moved down the hill I guess. Then they limed it alot and moved the outhouses along the top of the bank over the course of the years. So its about 100 feet long and then down about fifty feet to the lake....so I am digging along this edge and actually have only dug in an area about 8x8 so far.
Now I am thinking about wading into the lake and seeing what rolled in there..... :D

Lots of neat old stuff.

Can't imagine one wiping and losing a ring. LOL
Good work
Ken

Fantastic, Gypsy!! I can't wait to see pictures of the site. 8)

Hey...an old tennis racquet makes a great sifter. I've used one before...when that's all I had in the car! LOL

Good idea Lisa....I have a short handled racket ball one and am putting it in the Johnny Boy Jeep right now before I forget!

Great research finding the privy, Gypsy! 8) LOVE that ring AND the bottles!!!!

Keep those finds coming! Good luck tomorrow!!!

Nana ;)

Incredible assortment of relics, with the cream de la creme being the ring! Also, as Bavaria Mike suggested, you might try sifting for coins and other small items.

Don't think I would ever try digging in one, :D :D, but you sure got some nice finds, by doing that. :)

That's a lot of great stuff...when you gotta go, well, you gotta go...digging that is. :)

HH!

Great finds Gypsy!
Now why would you take a spoon with ya to the outhouse??
Joe

Cool finds Gypsy, I like the ring! I also wonder what they were using the spoons for.....eeeew! :D

Great finds Gypsy! I think I would try sifting some as well.

I made a frame out of 2x2's and covered it with 1/4" hardware cloth. It fits over my wheelbarrow. Makes it easier to move the "dirt" out of the way and it sifts really fast. Better hurry, winters coming!

Great finds.....keep em coming

Very nice finds Gypsy. The sift will increase those finds immensley. Good Luck...
