I go through this same scenario a few times a day..Look out the window and a group of quail will be looking for food where I always feed them. I step out side and they freak out and fly into the brush on the other side of the creek..I'll throw out some chicken scratch and go back inside. As soon as I close the door, they come flying back to the feed.
I've watched them and noticed they always come flying back through the brush in about the same place, either under, over, or around the end of that stick on the left....Yesterday, I threw the scratch out, hid behind the porch rail, and used manual focus with the 400mm lens, and focused on that stick..When about a dozen of them started flying in, I just held the shutter button down rapid fire and took about 20 shots and got one that was in the focal area.
