Question about old turnpikes

I live near a road called montrose turnpike and i guess when it was first built, it was like the only good road to get from place to place so people had to pay to use it, and i was wondering if any1 knew anything about old turnpikes because I was thinking if i could find where the people had to pay, then it would be a good spot to detect. I figured it would be where the road starts but I wasnt sure. Any good ideas would be appreciated.

the main problem i have found about old roads still in use, is that most of them have been widened and paved over the years, removing the older soil and covering what remains in cement. we have several old toll roads where i live, and this has been the case with all of them. i hope it is different where you live. good thinking though, thats the kind of thinking that will land you a killer spot one day!
